Matt Drayton (67) white. Publisher of San Francisco newspaper, The Guardian
Joanna Drayton (23) white. Known as Joey, the Draytons only daughter. A recent intern for a medical research hospital in Hawaii
Doctor John Prentice (37) black. World renowned medical research doctor
Monsignor Ryan (75) white. Longtime family friend of the Draytons
John Prentice Sr (63) black. A retired schoolteacher
Mary Prentice (59) black. Works in a department store

Breakdown –All roles African Americans.
Memphis – Restaurant owner. Self made man whose values of hard work, diligence, persistence, and honestly have been consistently challenged by circumstances of his life
Wolf – Numbers runner who enjoys his notoriety and popularity with the community. Longs for female companionship but is unable to maintain or begin a relationship.
Risa – Resilient woman with deeply held convictions. Disfigured herself with a razor in order to focus attention away from her good looks and toward her personality. Disgusted that men think of her as a sex object.
Holloway – Wise and philosophical. Has come to accept his inability to effect change and continue to pursue life with zest and vigor
Sterling – Personable young man who appears to be somewhat unbalanced. Recently released from jail. Uses unorthodox logic and has a straightforward manner
Hambone – (40s) Mentally handicapped. A man who repeats the same two phases continually. Self contained and in a word of his own
West – (60s)An undertaker. Has allowed his love of money to overshadow the other possibilities of life
