SUMMARY –When an elementary school science teacher observes local Hawaiian kids playing in the irrigation ditches on the sugar plantation in Maui during the 1930’s, he dedicates his life to turning them into Olympic champion swimmers… without the benefit of a swimming pool. An original work based on a true story. KIYOSHI “KEO” (pronounced key-yo) NAKAMA –Asian American MALE Late teens to 20’s to play high school. Hides his dreams behind fear and practicality of living on the sugar plantation in Maui, 1937. Shy, reserved. But eventually comes out of his shell. Basic knowledge of hula/movement preferred, but not required. Knowledge of Hawaiian Pidgin English strongly suggested. TAKASHI “HALO” HIROSE – Asian American MALE Late teens to 20’s to play high school. Rambunctious, out-going. Big dreamer. “Class clown” who constantly gives his friends a hard time, but disarms them by his loyalty. Basic knowledge of hula/movement preferred, but not required. Knowledge of Hawaiian Pidgin English strongly suggested. WILLIAM “BILL” SMITH –Asian American/Mixed Race MALE Late teens to 20’s to play high school. Hawaiian and Caucasian (Hapa-Haole). Smart beyond his peer group. But wants to fit in. Up for a good challenge. And eventually proves his worth by standing up for himself. Basic knowledge of hula/movement preferred, but not required. Knowledge of Hawaiian Pidgin English strongly suggested. FUJIKO “FUDGE” KATSUTANI – Asian American FEMALE Late teens to 20’s to play high school. A pretty tomboy. Her family struggles give her a competitive edge, but pulls at her consciousness. Eventually lets down her wall. Basic knowledge of hula/movement preferred, but not required. Knowledge of Hawaiian Pidgin English strongly suggested. COACH SOICHI SAKAMOTO – Asian American MALE 30’s. Strong. Forceful. Intelligent. A “scientific” coach, whose ambitions become a detriment to his home life. Follows his passion regardless of what others say and eventually wins them over. Basic knowledge of hula/movement preferred, but not required. Knowledge of Hawaiian Pidgin English strongly suggested. MRS SAKAMOTO – Asian Pacific Islander FEMALE 30’s. Hawaiian. Coach’s wife. But she is the rock solid foundation he needs. Knowledge of Hawaiian Pidgin English strongly suggested.
