THE WIZ is an African-American re-telling of the classic novel The Wizard of Oz. Like the novel and the MGM movie (and UNLIKE the movie version of THE WIZ), the story starts on a farm in Kansas and then transitions to the magical Land of Oz. Dorothy is a young girl who gets caught up in a tornado, meets new friends, inspires them to fulfill their dreams and ultimately returns home with greater strength and maturity. The tone is joyful, funny, witty and heartfelt. The dialogue is at times sassy and knowing but the performances should always be genuine and permeated with a sense of innocence, energy and joy. The songs are a mix of r&b, gospel, soul and pop music. This production will neither play up the 70s ‘camp’/nostalgia factor, nor will it attempt to create a contemporary, hip-hop update of the score. The DTC production will be comprised of a cast of musical theater actor/singers in the principle roles, collaborating with a modern dance company – Dallas Black Dance Theatre – who will embody – through dance- the physical world of the play (the tornado, yellow brick road, poppies, winged monkeys, etc.)
Seeking the following roles.
Dorothy:
Female 18+ to play 13-15 yrs. old. She’s as bright and alive as she can be – adventure-loving with an infectious laugh – she’d like to remain a child for as long as possible; She’s got great energy, is strong and is an empathetic and loyal friend. Strong high mix belter with Fs and Gs; This character is African American
Scarecrow:
Early 20s-Mid 30s; no book smarts and thinks he lacks a brain but is actually wise, creative and a great communicator. He is made entirely of straw – making him very flexible/bendable; He’s outgoing and dynamic and a good friend. With great humor, he takes adversity in stride and is very trusting. Very strong true tenor, strong mover/actor; This character is Africa American
Cowardly Lion:
Mid 20s- Late 30sBelieves he’s a coward though in reality will fight when necessary to protect his friends and is completely trustworthy when the going gets tough. At first he struts about, displaying false, comical courage, trying to intimidate everyone. But when he is befriended by Dorothy we see his vulnerability, openness and even true bravery. He’s a bit of a Mama’s boy though and always quite theatrical. Baritone with a strong A flat; This character is African American
