Please prepare a brief monologue from a play by Shakespeare, preferably in verse. Monologues from Winter’s Tale are ok.
Please bring a picture and resume, stapled together.
Actors Shakespeare Company at NJCU actively seeks an ethnically diverse cast.
Leontes:
Early 30s to mid-40s. Depending upon auditions he may be cast older. Leading man; strong, even fearsome authority; advanced verse skills. Ability to make specific, moment-to-moment text-based choices will be a priority in auditions.
Polixenes:
Early 30s to mid-40s. A king. Cordial and gracious, regal, capable of great anger when crossed.
Hermione:
Mid-20s to mid-30s. Gracious, humorous, intelligent and honorable: The ideal wife, mother & queen. Exceptional strength and dignity even in weakened physical condition.
Paulina:
Early 40-mid 50s an older woman with a high position at court; a defender of Hermione. Straightforward, fearless: The play's central moral force. Has a comic side; at core, she is a healer. Doubles with Time. CAST. Actors auditioning may be considered for possible replacements if necessary.
Perdita/Mamillius:
Female Actor 18+ to play Boy of 7-12, Girl of 16-18 Mamillius: playful, rambunctious, bright. Perdita: Princess raised as a shepherdess: graceful, charming, intelligent, and regal.
Florizel:
Early-mid 20s; Prince, son of Polixenes. Idealistic, open and perceptive; Falls in love
a woman far below his status. Chooses True Love over Princely Duty. Will double with one or more small parts in first half.
Camillo:
40s to 50s Clever, indispensably competent royal counselor; crafty, good at self-preservation.
Old Shepherd:
55+ kind, simple, warm; gently comic. Salt of the Earth. Will double with one or more
small parts in first half.
Clown (aka Young Shepherd):
18-35 sweet, comically cowardly, not too bright. Will double with one or more small parts in first half, possibly CLEOMENES/DION Musical ability, esp. instrumental (folky & portable) a plus.
Cleomenes/Dion:
Any age, faithful courtier; torn between loyalty to king and doing what is right.
Autolycus:
Early 30s to 60s. Trickster/thief. Witty, charming, rogue; but genial and good-natured. Loves being himself. Must be able to sing reasonably well, but not necessarily opera/musical pro. Guitar, etc. a plus.
Antigonus:
Early 40-mid 60. Kind, sensible, royal servant. Commits a cruel act in the name of duty. Eaten by a bear. Will be doubled with other roles, possibly AUTOLYCUS.
