Breakdown

SEEKING:

Catherine Winslow (M20’s-E30’s) – Ronnie’s sister. An intelligent, self sufficient woman of average looks. A Suffragette. She is suspicious of Sir Robert Morton’s motives for helping Ronnie and the family.

Sir Robert Morton (40’s) Handsome, magnetic, intense & extremely intelligent. The most highly sought after barrister in England. He agrees to help the Winslow’s because he believes in Ronnie’s innocence.

Dickie Winslow (E20’s-M20’s) Ronnie’s brother. A student at Oxford more interested in girls and music than his future.

Violet (40’s-50’s) The Winslow’s maid of over 20 years. She has been with the Winslow’s since she was a girl, so has never been properly trained. But has, nevertheless, become a part of the family.

Ronnie Winslow (14-17) - a cadet at the Royal Naval College accused of the theft of a five-shilling postal order, but claims his innocence. He ages three years over the course of the play.

John Watherstone (30’s-E40’s) Catherine’s fiancée. A decent man who lacks the courage to stand up to his father, who is embarrassed by the attention the trial has attracted. Concerned with financial prospects.

Desmond Curry (40’s-50’s) A solicitor and close family friend of the Winslows. He is in love with Catherine and ultimately proposes marriage. A kind man, but not terribly exciting or interesting to Catherine.

Miss Barnes (30’s) A female reporter who visits the Winslow’s to do a story on the trial, but ends up being more interested in the Grace’s new curtains.

Fred (20’s-30’s) A photographer who visits the home with Miss Barnes.

The following roles have been CAST. Actors will be considered for possible replacements:

Arthur Winslow (M50’s-E60’s) Ronnie’s father. A passionate, intelligent man set on defending his son’s innocence, and preserving his families honor, at all costs.

Grace WInslow (M50’s-L50’s) A warm and caring wife and mother who, ultimately, wonders if Arthur’s zeal for the trial (and his desire for justice) is at the cost of his family and health.
