SYNOPSIS: Married people are divorcing in the name of gay marriage in the comic and phantasmagorical THE UN-MARRYING PROJECT. An act of civil disobedience with old WASPs, Orthodox Jews, and Tim Robbins & Susan Sarandon becomes a hard lesson in how when you try to change the world, the world changes you.

Seeking:

Simon:

Maybe early-30s. A young-ish man. A little neurotic. Somewhat intellectual and befuddled. Deep down, a romantic. A little sexually repressed, but eager for more experience. Progressive in his politics. Middle-class in his sensibilities, for the most part. A good heart.

Kim:

Maybe early-30s. A young-ish woman. A little edgy. Not cynical, but tough, skeptical, bossy, almost butch. A practicing heterosexual with Bi-tendencies. Radical in her politics and lifestyle. A born leader. Always ready for a fight.

Man 1:

Probably in his 50s or older. Part of the Chorus. Plays multiple roles including:

Mister Kramm:

An old, monied WASP. In his 80s. A lawyer. A good, fair-minded man of the old school. Was the father of a mentally challenged adult, now deceased.

Rabbi X:

A wise and good-natured rabbi.

Sal:

Probably in his 80s. A father. An Italian immigrant. A war veteran. Suffering from mild dementia.

Man 2:

Probably in his 40s. Part of the Chorus. Plays multiple roles including:

Peter:

A businessman in his 40s. Kind of an asshole, at least on the surface, but deep down, very sensitive.

Janos:

A gay, married, naturalized citizen. From undisclosed origins. Speaks with an accent. Pretty conservative for a gay dude. Gruff, sometimes grim. No-nonsense.

Tim Robbins:

A progressive celebrity.

Drunken Douche:

A guy who hangs out at a sports bar and cheers for his team too aggressively.

Man 3:

Probably in his 30s or younger. Part of the Chorus. Plays multiple roles, including:

Andy:

A public school teacher. Married to Janos. Very sensitive, almost frail. Probably had at least one emotional breakdown in the past.

Ephraim:

An orthodox Jew, wears a yarmulke, speaks with the kind of sing-songy Talmudic mannerisms of the Borough Park Chasidm. The son of hippies. Very worldly and down to earth, but deeply committed to his newfound religion.

Fletcher:

An industrious man with learning disabilities. Around forty. A ghost. The son of the Kramms.

Woman 1:

Probably in her 50s or older. Part of the Chorus. Plays multiple roles, including:

Mrs. Kramm:

An old, monied WASP. In her eighties. A housekeeper. Was the mother of a mentally challenged man, now deceased. Somewhat proper, but deep-feeling.

Hope:

The wife of a well-off man (Peter), who doesn’t let her keep a job. In her 40s. Good-hearted. Carrying a lot of pain around with her.

Maggie:

A married lesbian in her 40s or older. Had kind of a wild past.

Rose:

Late 70s. Italian immigrant. Mother of Andy. A little bat-shit crazy.

Susan Sarandon:

A progressive celebrity.

Woman 2:

Probably in her 30s. Part of the Chorus. Plays multiple roles, including:

Tzipora:

An Orhotodox Jewish woman in her 30s or slightly older. Became religious late in life. Terrified over her ticking biological clock, but concerned for the world beyond her own community. Filled with compassion.

Wendy:

A young-ish, married lesbian. A bit timid, and kind of a prude.
