Please prepare a brief contemporary monologue.

Please bring a current picture & resume, stapled back-to-back.

All roles are available unless otherwise specified; for pre-cast roles, auditioning performers will be considered as possible replacements, should any become necessary.

THE HABIT OF ART by Alan Bennett. Dir: David Muse. 1st reh: 8/8/11. Runs 9/7-10/16.

Note: THE HABIT OF ART contains “a play-within-a-play” about the relationship between W. H. Auden and Benjamin Britten. Each member of the company is rehearsing a character in the play-within-a-play, and plays a character in the play.

Henry:

British man, 50s-60s. Actor playing composer Benjamin Britten in the play-within-a-play.

Donald:

British man, 30s-40s. Actor playing a biographer of W. H. Auden, Humphrey Carpenter, in the play-within-a-play.

Tim:

British man, 20s. Actor playing Stuart, a rent boy.

Charlie:

British boy, age 10. Sings.

Brian:

British man, 30s-40s. Actor who plays Boyle, W. H. Auden’s scout.

Neil:

British man, 30s-40s. The playwright of the play-within-a-play.

British woman, 40s-50s. The stage manager; plays May in the play-within-a-play.

25. Event-planner. Richard’s girlfriend. Naïve, and even daffy.

Sarah Goodwin:

Woman, late 20s. “A force to be reckoned with. She always wants to be the sexiest woman in the room. She is rarely as condescending as she wants to be.”

Katie:

Woman, late 20s. “Katie is all elbows and knees. She has a childlike unawareness of her sexuality. She always hates whatever job she’s working.”

Regan:

Woman, late 20s. “She’s a queen bee is there ever was one. She is perfect, with a penchant for meanness that no amount of beauty can hide.”

Jeff:

Man, early 30s. “A self-assuredly good-looking guy who actually swaggers.”

Joe:

Man, mid 20s. “Joe is a variation of those easygoing stoner types that have become so fashionable to fuck right now. But he’s in no way the fashionable version. More like the listens-to-jam-bands-and-John-Zorn version.”

Becky:

Woman, late 20s. “She is indeed overweight but pretty. This is partly due to the fact that she carries herself in a confident way. There’s never a hint of insecurity in her demeanor ... except when she’s talking to Regan”
