Juliana Smithton is a successful neurologist whose life seems to be coming unhinged. Her husband has filed for divorce, her daughter has eloped with a much older man and her own health is in jeopardy. But nothing is as it seems. Piece by piece, a mystery unfolds as fact blurs with fiction, past collides with present and the elusive truth about Juliana boils to the surface.
---
Roles are available unless otherwise specified:
IAN: Early 50s. Juliana’s husband. An oncologist. A fierce intellect in his own right. Opinionated, capable. A loving man who has already suffered huge loss in his life. He’s doing his active best to manage a bewildering situation he’s nowhere near ready for.
THE WOMAN: Plays several roles, Late 20s-early 30s: DR. CINDY TELLER – a neurobiologist, smart and authoritative, despite her relative youth. Unflappable. LAUREL – Juliana and Ian’s daughter. Overextended mother of small children, estranged from her parents, and carrying a deep well of anger toward them. Sharp-tongued. WOMAN – quite vulnerable – in the midst of a messy divorce – but capable of humor, irony, and kindness, despite her trying circumstances.
THE MAN: Plays multiple roles, Late 30s-early 40s: RICHARD SILLNER – Juliana’s former post-doctoral student, now estranged. Smart and patient, a natural peacemaker, but can’t help holding a grudge against Juliana. BOBBY – A nurse. Gentle, professional. Chooses his words carefully. Kind.
JULIANA: CAST (Laurie Metcalf). Auditioning performers will be considered as possible (emergency) replacements, should any become necessary. A sharply charismatic scientist. Her fierce intelligence is both her greatest asset and her largest burden, having helped her carve a niche in a deeply competitive field infiltrated by brilliant minds, and yet bringing her a deep impatience and a drive not always understood by those around her.
