Dark comedy about love, loss and human connection. As Rita's husband is dying, she gathers her children around her. Together for the first time, they STRIVE for sentiment -- but mostly fail. Instead, they attack each other, betray each other, reveal each other's secrets and ultimately love each other.
All understudy positions are available. Onstage roles are cast with performers who played them in a previous production. Seeking:
Understudy for Rita Lyons:
AVAILABLE POSITION. Rita’s age: 58-75. Has the kind of charm that masks a deep well of venom. She smiles while she eviscerates. She may not have been “to the manner born”, but she’s learned what to wear and how to speak (quite well). Still sexually viable and terrified of being alone, she is desperate to find some new happiness. Onstage role is cast with Linda Lavin.
Understudy for Ben Lyons:
AVAILABLE POSITION. Ben’s age: 60-75. A successful businessman, now dying. A bulldog with considerable power, Ben is still capable of volcanic rage. His warmest feelings seem to be reserved for his daughter. His disdain for his son is matched by his hostility toward his wife, Rita, whom he nonetheless needs and has probably always loved. Onstage role is cast with Dick Latessa.
Understudy for Curtis and Brian:
AVAILABLE POSITION. Roles’ ages: 28-38. Curtis: Ben and Rita’s son. A profoundly lonely young man. Curtis is gay, but afraid of any real connection. A writer, he is well-spoken and highly intelligent. Onstage role is cast with Michael Esper. Brian: Handsome, glib real-estate broker. Sexy and charming. His homosexuality should come as a surprise. When cornered, his ferocity should be genuinely frightening. Onstage role is cast with Gregory Wooddell.
Understudy for Lisa Lyons and Nurse:
AVAILABLE POSITION. Roles’ ages: 30-45. Lisa: Ben and Rita’s daughter. A recovering alcoholic, struggling to free herself from the ties of an abusive marriage, Lisa struggles vainly to be sunny. Occasionally loopy. When she feels threatened, Lisa is capable of genuine ferocity. Onstage role is cast with Kate Jennings Grant. Nurse (Jeanette): While she appears, at first, to be quiet, efficient and dutiful, she later reveals herself to be brassy, bossy and powerful. She is also a philosopher of the most home-spun nature. Onstage role is cast with Brenda Pressley.
