Seeking strong singer-actors. Note: the role of ULYSSES has been cast.

Homer Macauley:

Male, 18+ (to believably play 14 years old). A good-natured, happy, eager kid who gets a job delivering telegrams to help his family make ends meet. He ultimately learns to face tragedy and loss. High tenor with enough agility to sing a difficult operatic cadenza. Range: Db3–C5

Spangler:

Male, 30s. Sexy, intelligent, and compassionate blue-collar manager of the telegraph office. Madly in love with Diana, but intimidated by her background. A father figure to Homer. High Baritone. Range: Bb2–A4

Grogan:

Male, 60s or older. A playful old man, who works at the telegraph office. Worn down and run ragged by the sadness in the world, he drinks despite his doctor’s orders. Bass-Baritone. Range: B2-F4

Marcus Macauley:

Male, mid-late 20s. Homer’s older brother, who is overseas fighting in WWII. Misses his family and his girlfriend Mary. Good-looking and fun, also introspective and sad. Tenor with slightly more contemporary sound. Range: D3-G#4

Tobey:

Male, mid-late 20s. Marcus’ army friend from the War. An orphan, he loves to hear stories about Marcus’ family. He has a gorgeous, rich voice and a huge heart. Bari-tenor. Range: D3-A4

Trainman:

Black Male, 20-30s. Loud, booming voice, on a spirited man with a huge smile. Doubles as a Soldier. Tenor capable of singing in a gospel style. Range: E3-B4

Matthew Macauley:

Male, 40s-50s. The Macauley’s deceased father, a striking and loving presence who remains with his family in spirit. Baritone. Range: D3-D4

Kate Macauley:

Female, 40s-50s. Mother of the Macauley children. A life-force, she has been holding her family together since her husband died. Beautiful, earthy, spiritual and loving. Folk sound with a broad range, extremely strong belt and mix. Range: E3-Eb5

Bess Macauley:

Female, early 20s. Homer’s pretty older sister, in college. She dreams of meeting the love of her life. Extremely versatile singer, must have a belt/strong mix up to F and a strong legit soprano. Range: Bb3-Bb5

Mary Arena:

Female, early 20s. Bess’s best friend from next door, engaged to Marcus. A strong-willed exterior masks her longing for Marcus. Extremely versatile singer, must have a high belt/strong mix and legit soprano. Range: Ab3-Eb5

Diana Steed:

Female, 30s. Spangler’s girlfriend, she comes from a very wealthy background and is used to getting what she wants. Beautiful, fun-loving and buxom, she is madly in love with Spangler. R&B style belt with a strong legit high soprano/mix. Range: Ab3-G5

Mexican Woman:

Hispanic Female, 40s or older. A mother who grieves when she learns her son has been killed in the army. Strong belt, sings in the style of traditional Mexican folk music. Range: Bb3-Bb4

Beautiful Music:

Black Female, 20s-40s. A beautiful, other-worldy presence with the star power of a Billie Holliday, Lena Horne, or Ella Fitzgerald. Gospel and R&B belt with an extremely soprano mix on top. Must be able to riff. Range: B3-A5

Ensemble:

Men & Women, a variety of ages 20-50, and all vocal types. All must be singers and actors of enormous vocal range and capability, with ability to hold harmony parts, as they sing the majority of the score and are present throughout the entire piece. All will be highly featured. Actors who play the guitar are encouraged to audition.
