Prepare a brief monologue from a British contemporary play using a British accent.

Bring picture and resume, stapled together.

*Salary note: AEA Salary commensurate with role and experience. (Minimum for this contract is $600) + a private apartment, fully furnished and equipped within walking distance of the Theatre in the Dupont Circle neighborhood. The apartment has internet. Travel to and from DC is round-trip coach Amtrak fare or cash equivalent. Gym membership available.

NOTE: This is the American premiere of Alan Bennett’s play which has played to great success at the National Theatre of Great Britain and on tour in the UK. It contains “a play within a play” about the relationship between the poet, W.H. Auden and the composer, Benjamin Britten. Each member of the production company is rehearsing a character in the play within a play. All of the actors must use legitimate British accents.

Seeking:

Henry:

A British, Male Actor, 50s-60s, who plays the composer “Benjamin Britten” in the play within the play. Britten was arguably the greatest British composer of the 20th century; classy, reserved, preferably thin & tall (but definitely not heavy-set, sloppy) has a dry wit, aristocratic. LEADING ROLE. Prototype: Rene Auberjonois, Byron Jennings,

Kay:

British Female, 45-50s, the stage manager who also plays “May” in the play within the play. Kay has “seen it all” and is a vital woman. MAJOR ROLE.

Donald:

A British Male Actor, 30s, who plays the biographer of W. H. Auden, “Humphrey arpenter,” in the play within the play. He is a fussy, “straight” man, a character actor who is not handsome but who is well-educated. He is an accomplished, comic actor. MAJOR ROLE

Neil:

British Male, 40-60, the playwright of the play within the play. A smart, biting man who knows he is the cleverest man in the room. MAJOR ROLE

Tim:

A British Male Actor, 24-29, who plays “Stuart”, an attractive – even pretty - “rent boy” in the play within the play. Not skinny and not a “gym rat.” One of the accents he does must be cockney. MAJOR ROLE

George:

A British Male, early 20s the inexperienced assistant stage manager to Kay. He is a skinny, funny guy. GOOD ROLE
