Seeking
Equity and non-Equity singing actors, men and women for this National Tour.

Seeking opera singers as well as trained musical theatre singers with a traditional sound.

Preparation
Please prepare a brief legit or traditional musical theater song that shows your range. Please bring sheet music in the appropriate key and a photo/resume stapled together. A piano accompanist will be provided. A cappella singing will NOT be allowed.

Breakdown

[JAKE] Male, 30s, African American. A strong, salt-of-the-earth fisherman and husband to Clara. Desperate for money for his family, he is forced to take his boat out during a violent storm. Jake will be part of the ensemble. Must be a strong singer. Lyric Baritone. PRINCIPAL

[UNDERSTUDY MARIAH] Female, 30s – 40s, African American. To appear in the onstage ensemble or to swing and cover the principal role of MARIAH (A cookshop owner and saucy matriarch of the community. Equally opinionated and motherly, she shuns Bess at first but then comforts her in her time of need.) Must be a strong singer. Contralto. ENSEMBLE

[UNDERSTUDY PORGY] Male, late 30s – 40s, African American. To appear in the onstage ensemble or to swing and cover the principal role of PORGY (A crippled beggar and gambler who is virile and attractive. Good hearted and noble, he defends and takes in Bess when the other residents of Catfish Row shun her and he competes for her love against the violent Crown.) Must be an exceptionally strong, emotive singer. Lyric baritone. ENSEMBLE

[UNDERSTUDY BESS] Female, 30s – 40s, African-American. To appear in the onstage ensemble or to swing and cover the principal role of BESS (Crown’s girl who is left to defend herself when he flees town. She is shunned by the town but taken in by the cripple Porgy, with whom she falls in love. She is beautiful, soulful, and experienced.) High Soprano. ENSEMBLE

[UNDERSTUDY SERENA] Female, 30s – 50s, African American. To appear in the onstage ensemble or to swing and cover the principal role of SERENA (Mature wife of the gambler Robbins. She mourns his death when he is killed by Crown during a craps game.) Must be an exceptionally strong, emotive singer. Soprano. ENSEMBLE

[UNDERSTUDY CLARA] Female, 20s – 30s, African American. To appear in the onstage ensemble or to swing and cover the principal role of CLARA (A young mother and wife to the fisherman Jake. She sings a lullaby to her child and fears for her husband who is adrift at sea during a storm.) Must be a strong singer. Soprano. ENSEMBLE

[HONEYMAN] Male, 20s-40s, African-American. To appear in the onstage ensemble and possibly cover principal roles. Should have a VERY STRONG HIGH TENOR voice. Opera experience is a plus. ENSEMBLE

[STRAWBERRY WOMAN] Female, 20s-40s, African-American. To appear in the onstage ensemble and possibly cover principal roles. Should have a BEAUTIFUL SOPRANO voice. Opera experience is a plus. ENSEMBLE
