Preparation
Please prepare a 2-minute contemporary monologue and 32 bars of a contemporary music theatre song in the style of the show (think Avenue Q, Ahrens and Flaherty, Alan Menken). Bring sheet music; accompanist provided. Please bring a picture and resume, stapled together.

World premiere musical. Seeking: The Storyteller: AVAILABLE ROLE. Late 20s - late 30s. Not your typical ingénue. Married to the Professor, who pulls her onstage to be part of his circus act. A reluctant performer, and uncomfortable in the spotlight, the Storyteller runs away from the act but secretly follows the Professor and his friend the Flea on their adventures, narrating their story. Seeking a strong actress with a wry sense of humor, who can carry us through the evening. Must sing (mezzo soprano). The Cannibal King / Hans Christian Andersen: AVAILABLE ROLE. 30s-50s. King: Ruler of his island of Cannibals. Hasn’t laughed in 102 years. Too busy dealing with the pressure of ruling his kingdom and with his rebellious teenage daughter. Actor must have strong comic timing. Baritone. The following roles are cast. Auditioning performers will be considered as possible replacements, should any become necessary. The Professor: CAST. Man, 30s. Orphaned as a young boy. Has grown up to become a circus performer and magician, and is called"The Professor" because he can be “mistaken for a respectable gentleman”, not because he’s a teacher. Has a bit of Buster Keaton in him. Played by a little man, he has a long, sad face, comically serious. Travels the world and goes on adventures with his friend the Flea, while missing his wife The Storyteller, who has disappeared. Tenor. The Flea: CAST. Male, 30s. The Professor’s best friend. Blood-sucking, biting flea. Looks a bit unkempt a la John Belushi, but speaks in sonorous, dignified tones a la John Barrymore. Played by a big man. Baritone. The Cannibal Queen: CAST. 30s–50s. Rules the island of Cannibals with her husband the King. She is the frequent chef of fresh, tasty human, but prepares pasta for her family when there is no human sacrifice available. Constantly worried about her rebellious teenage daughter, she goes to great lengths to ensure her well-being. Skilled singing comic actress needed. Mezzo soprano. The Cannibal Princess: CAST. Early 20s. Loud, brassy, bratty teenage daughter of the King and Queen of Cannibal Island. Rarely thinks of others, used to getting what she wants and not afraid to act out when things don’t go her way. Falls in love with the Flea, and leaves home to go on adventures with him and the Professor. Mezzo soprano. The Loyal Subject / Sea Captain: CAST."Ageless" man. Tenor). Subject: Exasperated and overworked subject of the royal family. Captain: Salty. Steers the ship that discovers Cannibal Island. Tenor.
