Please prepare a contemporary monologue, 3 minutes or less. Please bring a photo and resume, stapled back-to-back.

Breakdown:

Setting: 1895. The Lounge of Chilford Chiredzi’s home, in the Boomtown of Salisbury (present-day Harare, Zimbabwe). Set amid the colonial scramble for Southern Africa in 1895, the play follows Jekesai, a young girl who escapes a forced marriage in her native village and lands in a Westernized household where Africans are pitted against each other over the arrival of Christianity.

All roles are available:

Mai Kuda: female, African, mid 50’s. Mother of the earth.

Jekesai-Ester: female, African, late Teens. Niece of Mia Kuda who finds herself caught between her loyalties to her family and culture but indebted to this new Christian god.

Chilford: male, African, 30’s. A catechist for the Roman Catholic church. He is a man of great deliberation and precision, never once placing anything in the wrong place.

Kuda: male, African,20’s. Mai Kuda’s son

Chancellor: male, African, 30’s. a fellow member of the Catholic Church and interpreter for white mine owners. A bit of a scoundrel and an opportunist.

Uncle: male, African, 40’s-50’s. Jekesai-Ester’s Uncle who is looking to sell her to another man in the village for the Brideprice.

Prudence: female, African, 30’s. Chancellor’s fiancée.
