Seeking:
From acclaimed playwright Tanya Barfield (BLUE DOOR, OF EQUAL MEASURE) and directed by the Intiman’s Associate Producer Andrew Russell comes THE CALL, a moving and often uproariously funny world premiere about international adoption that probes the complexities of marriage, friendship, loyalty and betrayal.
Seeking:
Annie:
Caucasian, mid 30s-early 40s. An artist who hasn’t painted in years. She comes from a privileged background and desperately wants to raise a child – it is a dream she has always had – but she cannot conceive. This fight for a child has toughened her and this toughness has developed into a sense of humor and determination that enables her to fight back tears and endure despite the odds. She considers herself worldly and bohemian, but in truth with the exception of Rebecca, her African-American Lesbian friend and Rebecca’s partner, Annie’s surroundings are fairly lily white.
Peter:
Caucasian, 40s. Annie’s husband. He is loving and supportive, but is hungry for his own personal needs—which have taken second shrift to Annie’s over the years—to be acknowledged. He has a strong desire to be a father and comes from a solid upbringing and well-off family. He makes a good living for his soon-to-be-family.
Drea:
African American woman, 30s. Rebecca’s partner. She is a practicing artist. Frank and forthright, she has had to work hard to climb ahead and does not come from the same privileged background as Rebecca, Annie and Peter. She is publicly supportive of their dream to start a family, but privately questions whether or not this well-off white couple should be adopting a child from Ethiopia.
Alemu:
African-American man, late 30s-40s. An extremely gifted storyteller. He is a charming and mysterious bachelor. Haunted by a past that is colored with tragedy, he is still capable of delight.
