CLAUDIA/ENSEMBLE: Precocious, sensitive girl. She must be able to move gracefully between the innocence of youth and the wisdom of the narrator who has lived through it all. Dexterity with direct address a must. Played by an adult actor- 20’s
FRIEDA /DARLENE/ENSEMBLE: Claudia’s older sister. Somewhat more practical than Claudia. Played by an adult actor- 20’s-30’s
PECOLA/ENSEMBLE: A shy, quiet, pained presence. She should be completely innocent. No self-pity, more of a quiet pride. Must have very dark brown skin. Played by an adult actor- 20’s-30’s
MAMA/ENSEMBLE: 40’s-50’s She possesses an imposing presence. She loves her children despite her stern manner.
MRS. BREEDLOVE/ENSEMBLE: 40’s-50’s An older version of Pecola, also dark brown. Painfully shy and insecure. Must be very adept at addressing the audience.
SOAPHEAD CHURCH/DADDY/ENSEMBLE: late 30’s-50’s Charismatic, odd, charming, mature. Dark brown complexion.
MAUREEN PEAL/ENSEMBLE: 20’s-30’s Light skinned African American. More complicated than merely snotty new girl. Might involve some work with a mask.
CHOLLY/ENSEMBLE: 40’s-50’s Pecola’s father. The shell of a man who may have been physically impressive at one time, dark brown complexion.
