Breakdown

PLEASE NOTE: Performers of all ethnic and racial backgrounds are encouraged to audition.

Nancy - 40s, female, a high school principal. Nancy is intelligent, warm and caring, but a task-master when she needs to be. She’s down to earth and driven, but struggling to keep her head above water and balance career and family as a newly single mother. Feels a tremendous sense of guilt over her past alcoholism. Above all she is a mother who would do anything for her children.

Tom - 40s, male, Nancy's ex-husband, a cop. A real guys guy. Tom can be alternately gruff and charming. He obviously cares about Nancy and the boys, but struggles with his temper and finding the balance of family involvement now that he and Nancy are divorced.

Jacob - 18, male, Nancy's eldest son. Incredibly intelligent, but deeply troubled. Jacob is both articulate and manipulative. He is able to mask his emotions and at times appear even charming, but below the surface is struggling to quell his capacity for anger, violence, and self-destruction.

Charlie - 13, male, Nancy's youngest son. Smart, sensitive, and wise beyond his years, Charlie feels an immense responsibility to help his mother. He idolizes his older brother, but is troubled by his actions. Must be comfortable with strong language and a play that tackles mature themes.

Sydney - 18, female, a college student. Young, fragile and striking. Sydney is Jacob’s ex-girlfriend. There is something off-kilter about her. Earnest, with good intentions, but just a little bit off.

Mr. Marsh – 50’s/60s, male, a teacher at Nancy's school. Marsh is the passionate, professorial English teacher everyone loves at the school. He’s good at his job and knows it, but is hiding a darker side. Intelligent, egotistical, and more than capable of using his intellect to his advantage.
