Please bring a picture & resume, stapled back-to-back.

Notes: ALL ACTORS MUST HAVE STRONG COMMAND OF CLASSICAL TEXT. All roles are available (i.e. not yet offered and accepted).

JULIUS CAESAR

The production concept is a contemporary democracy resembling American politics today. Production will premiere at the Guthrie Theatre in Minneapolis.

Julius Caesar / Others:

Man, late 20s – 50s. Theatre states that it prefers to cast this track as African American. Ruler of Rome. Charismatic, determined, winsome. Polished, with a strong sense of self. Loved by the people. Wonderful orator.

Brutus:

Man, late 20s – 50s. Theatre states that it prefers to cast this role as African American. Conspirator against Caesar. High position in the government. Honorable but conflicted. Loves his country. Has lots of secrets. Keeps information from his wife, and feels guilty about it.

Cassius:

Man, late 20s–50s, any ethnicity. Conspirator against Caesar. High position in the government. Subtle, charming, casual and easygoing. Jealous.

Antony:

Man, late 20s–50s. Any race. High position in government. Caesar’s right-hand man. Loyal, headstrong. Wonderful orator.

Calpurnia / As Cast:

Woman, 20s–40s. Theatre states that it prefers to cast this track as African American. Strong, loving wife. Careful. Concerned about the possibility of an assassination attempt on her husband. Actress will most likely play senators and soldiers as well (as a woman).

Portia / As Cast:

Woman, 20s–40s, any ethnicity. Loving wife. Suspicious. Wants to know more about her husband, but is shut out. Actress will most likely play senators and soldiers as well (as a woman).

Soothsayer / As Cast:

Man, 20s–40s, any ethnicity. Member of the press. Great foresight. Can analyze political situations. Actor will most likely play senators and soldiers as well.

Flavius / As Cast:

Woman, 20s–40s, any ethnicity. Wealthy mourner of Pompey. Has contempt for the poor. Actress will most likely play senators and soldiers as well (as a woman).

Murellus / As Cast:

Man, 20s–50s, any ethnicity. Wealthy mourner of Pompey. Has contempt for the poor. Actor will most likely play senators and soldiers as well.

Octavius / As Cast:

Man, 20s–40s, any ethnicity. Future emperor of Rome. Follower of Julius Caesar. Leader of the army. Smart, decisive. Actor will most likely play senators in first half of the play.

Cobbler / As Cast:

Man, 20s–40s, any ethnicity. Funny. A cut-up. Poor; likes to make fun of the rich. Actor will most likely play senators and soldiers as well.

Cinna / As Cast:

Man, 20s–40s, any ethnicity. Conspirator. Shrewd and smart. Actor will most likely play other senators and soldiers as well.

Casca / As Cast:

Man, 20s–40s, any ethnicity. Conspirator. Funny. A slacker, and likes being one. Possibly overweight. Actor will most likely play other senators and soldiers as well.

Antipholus of Syracuse:

20s. Leading man-type, charming, empathetic, romantic.

Antipholus of Ephesus:

20s. Overgrown frat boy. Short-fused.

Dromio of Syracuse:

20s. Servant of Antipholus of Syracuse. Comedic. Deft physical ability needed.

Dromio of Ephesus:

20s: Servant of Antipholus of Ephesus. Comedic. Deft physical ability needed.

Adriana:

20s. Wife of Antipholus of Ephesus. Insecure.

Luciana:

20s. Adriana’s sister. Confident, beautiful.

Angelo:

20s-40s. Gold merchant, middle man. Weak.

2nd Merchant:

20s-40s. A merchant, a thug. Money-driven.

Courtesan:

20s-40s. A mermaid or siren. Beautiful, otherworldly.

Dr. Pitch:

20s-40s. New-age medicine man.

Duke Solinus:

30s-40. Forced in leadership. Sympathetic.

Egeon:

40s. Father to Syracuse and Ephesus. Desperate, subtly cunning.

Emilia:

40s. Nun who forced herself into a convent after being separated from her husband (Egeon) and children (Syracuse and Ephesus). Lonely, blatant, tender.
