Setting: 4th of July, near the end of WWII, at the Talley family’s moonlit boathouse in rural Missouri. Sally Talley, the “spinster” daughter (at 31) of this prominent local family, is being courted by an unlikely suitor in Matt Friedman, a Jewish accountant from St. Louis. Both are pitiful yet glorious human beings, clumsily finding their way toward each other in what may be their only chance for happiness.
Seeking (both roles are available):
Matt Friedman:
Jewish, 40-50. A Jewish dialect is occasionally used. Accountant from St. Louis. Has been writing to Sally every day for a year. Her only reply has been to tell him to stop writing. He has come to Lebanon, MO to propose marriage to Sally in person. Charming, pushy, funny and sympathetic.
Sally Talley:
31. “Spinster” from a wealthy, conservative Methodist family in small-town Lebanon, MO. She is quintessentially Midwestern. Her marriage prospects appear dead. Feisty, combative, with a hidden heart.
