Equity actors for roles in the Shakespeare Theatre of New Jersey's 2024 season (see breakdown).

Some roles will be understudied.

PREPARATION

Please prepare two monologues, no longer than 3 minutes long total. Please prepare a Shakespeare monologue in verse for consideration for Macbeth or As You Like It. Actors interested in A Gentlemen's Guide to Love and Murder should sing sixteen bars acapella of a song of their choice, instead of a second monologue. Please bring your headshot and resume stapled together.

[MISS MARIETTA SHINGLE] (Late 40s-mid 60s) Cockney accent. A long-time friend of Monty’s deceased parent. An eccentric storyteller.

[SIBELLA HALLWARD] (20s-30s) The young society girl Monty loves. Self-absorbed, charming, and ambitious.

[PHOEBE D’YSQUITH] (20s-30s) Operatic. Romantic, innocent, and earnest, in love with Monty.

[THE D’YSQUITH FAMILY] (30s-50s)

[JOHN HEMINGES] (40s - early 50s) A sensible and serious businessman, he is the financial manager of the King’s Men and a friend of Shakespeare’s.

[REBECCA HEMINGES/ANNE HATHAWAY SHAKESPEARE] (40s-50s) John’s wife, a resilient woman devoted to her husband, children, and the family grocery business. Anne Hathaway Shakespeare is Shakespeare’s resolute, but now ailing wife.

[ALICE HEMINGES/SUSANNAH SHAKESPEARE] (late 20s-30s) Alice is the daughter of John and Rebecca, she is an alewife and keeps close company with players in the tavern. Doubles as Susannah Shakespeare, the dutiful daughter of Shakespeare.

[HENRY CONDELL] (Male, late 30s-early 40s) An audacious actor in The King’s Men and a friend of Shakespeare’s.

[ELIZABETH CONDELL/EMILIA BASSANO LANIER/OTHERS] (30s-50s) Elizabeth is a spirited, intelligent woman and also Henry’s wife. Emilia Lanier is an outspoken Italian feminist and poet.

[RICHARD BURBAGE/WILLIAM JAGGARD] (50’s) The most seasoned and famous actor to have played in Shakespeare’s plays, and he knows it. Doubles as William Jaggard, a cunning and connected publisher.

[BEN JONSON] (40s-50s) Poet laureate of England and friend/rival of Shakespeare, Ben has love of drink and poetry. Melancholy.

[ED KNIGHT/ISAAC JAGGARD] (20’s-30’s) Ed Knight is the stage manager for the King’s Men; a stickler. Isaac Jaggard is the son of William Jaggard and is set to inherit the publishing business In contrast to his father, he is sensitive and artistic.

[RALPH CRANE] (30s-40s) Quiet and hardworking scribe for the King’s Men.

[MARCUS] A nosy printer’s apprentice for the Jaggards.

[THE GHOST OF CHRISTMAS PRESENT/THE GHOST OF CHRISTMAS YET TO COME/OTHERS] (Any gender, 30s-50s) The Ghost of Christmas Present appears to Scrooge hoping to change his ways. The Ghost of Christmas Yet to Come appears to warn Scrooge what is to come if he doesn’t.

[TIMOTHY CRATCHIT/MISS BELLE FEZZIWIG/OTHERS] (20s-30s) Timothy Cratchit, or Tiny Tim, the youngest Cratchit. Belle, radiant former fiancee of a younger Scrooge.

[THE GHOST OF CHRISTMAS PAST/SCROOGE’S NEPHEW FRED/OTHERS] (20s-40s) The Ghost of Christmas Past delivers a vision of Scrooge’s past. Fred, a lively, joyful man, a stark contrast to Scrooge.

[MRS. CRATCHIT/JACOB MARLEY/OTHERS] (30s-40s) Mrs. Cratchit, Bob's wife, a kind and loving woman dedicated to her family. Jacob Marley, Ebenezer Scrooge's 7-years-dead business partner.

[VERY YOUNG SCROOGE/MARTHA CRATCHIT/OTHERS] (20s-30s) Very Young Scrooge appears in Scrooge’s vision of the Past. Martha, eldest Cratchit daughter.
