SEEKING:

Charity (30 – 40) Role for a powerhouse character-actress who is an outstanding dancer and singer. Charity is A dance-hall hostess with an insatiable spirit: as vulnerable as she is tough and as funny as she is heartbreaking. The eternal optimist, she is desperate to be loved for who she really is, not who she appears to be. She longs for a better life but is unskilled in labor and unlucky in love. A true star-turn. Mezzo

Oscar Lindquist / Vittorio Vidal / Charlie (35-45) One actor to play all three of Charity’s suitors. As Oscar: a conservative, claustrophobic salesman who blossoms from reserved and uptight to joyful and fearless, as he falls for Charity. He genuinely loves her for her authenticity until he is forced to face his own judgmental demons. Major comic chops but equally adept as a dramatic actor. As Vittorio: the quintessential Italian movie star (circa 1960) – extravagant, arrogant, and extraordinarily handsome. He is charmed by Charity’s innocence and naiveté so he allows her a romantic, whirlwind sojourn into his extravagant lifestyle – almost by accident. Speaks with an Italian accent. As Charlie: a Guido-lowlife-thief. Baritone with strong upper range/excellent singer

Nickie and Helene (30-35) Charity’s best friends and confidantes who are also dance-hall hostesses. They, too, long for a better life than their current situation allows but they seem both more worldly-wise and realistic than Charity – even as they dream along with her. Wisecracking but sincere, both ladies should be sensational dancers and singers. Nickie is Caucasian, Helene is African-American. One actress will likely cover Charity. Mezzos

Herman (35-55) the gruff, lowlife proprietor of the Fangango Ballroom. He expects his hostesses to work for little and accept their lot, despite their indignation, so long as he makes a buck. But he surprisingly proves himself a true romantic/sentimentalist when he speaks at Charity’s engagement party. This Actor will also play many supporting roles. A comic, robust high-Tenor
