Sweeney Todd:
Late 40s/early 50s. Bass/baritone. He is described in the script as having the build of a dock worker. Thick, sturdy, sexy – and dangerous. Has to have a real edge of complexity and danger.
Anthony:
Mid to late 20s. A handsome, young sailor. Excellent baritone/tenor. Handsome yes, but strong, also.
Johanna:
The script says 18. So needs to look no older than early 20s. Stunningly pretty. And gorgeous, lyric soprano.
Beggar Woman (Lucy):
Mid-40s. A haggard, mentally deranged street woman. Mezzo-Soprano (but would be great if she had a high C in there). You also have to believe that 15-20 years ago, she was as gorgeous as Johanna.
Judge Turpin:
Early 60s. A corrupt, lascivious aristocratic Judge. Basso. He is all propriety on the outside, and deviousness inside. Definitely has to have a danger to him, and the more homely he is – the ickier his attraction to Johanna will be.
The Beadle:
40s or 50s. A plump, solicitous cop. Tenor and strong Falsetto. He is oily (in the sense of always looking for a way to better his own lot, whether that route is just or not). And conniving. But the surface is serene.
Pirelli:
late 40s /50s (he’s a contemporary of Sweeney). Tenor, should have a strong Hi C. An Irishman, who has adopted the persona of a famous Italian Barber. He is slick, and preening – a showoff. Highly competitive.
