Seeking:
PRINCIPALS:
Norma Desmond:
Female, 50. Still beautiful. A great silent film star who's time in the spotlight has passed. Unable to face this, she's entered a fantasy world where she is still the queen of the screen. She's pampered, egotistical, temperamental, entitled. In short, a true diva. She's also very vulnerable and fragile. Requires a commanding actress of great presence and charisma with a strong belt, mix and beautiful soprano.
Joe Gillis:
Male, late 20s-early 30s; leading man with edge (not juvenile). Joe is a masculine, good-looking, street smart writer, who's down on his luck at the moment. He uses his sex appeal when necessary to get what he needs. The show is really his story. He needs to be charming and sympathetic with a strong lyric baritone to bari-tenor voice.
Max:
Male, late 50s-60s; Austrian. Serves as Norma's butler. He is actually a former film director who's ended up nurturing Norma and her illusions to help her survive. He has a quiet but commanding presence, ever watching in that European manner. Strong, lush bass baritone voice.
Betty Schaffer:
20s; female, an aspiring screen writer, now working as a reader for a producer. She's pretty, bright, and, unlike most, still idealistic about the business. She has a big heart and a good sense of humor. Soprano with an easy mix.
Cecil B. Demile:
60s, male; the famous director of Hollywood epics; commanding with most, compassionate towards Norma. Sings.
Artie:
Late 20s-early 30s, male; an assistant director; Joe's loyal best friend in Hollywood, a good guy. sings.
FEATURED ENSEMBLE:
Sheldrake:
50s; character guy; a studio executive-a mournful dyspeptic figure. Sings
Manfred:
Character guy 40s or so; the effusive owner of an exclusive men’s clothing shop. Sings.
