Breakdown

CHILDREN WILL BE SEEN AT A LATER DATE AS NEEDED. THIS CALL IS FOR ACTORS AND SINGERS WHO ARE HIGH SCHOOL SENIORS (18+) OR OLDER

AUDITON INSTRUCTIONS
Please prepare 32 bars of a song OR a 2 minute monologue OR 16 bars of a song and a 1 minute monologue. If singing, bring sheet music in correct key; accompanist provided both days. Do not sing A Cappella. You may sing from the shows if you wish. Bring picture & resume, stapled back-to-back.

Rehearsals will be held during the day (10:00am – 6:00pm).

GYPSY (SPT 7)

Mama Rose
Female, 30-45. Alto; F3-C5
Central character of the story. Vicariously lives out her showbusiness dreams through her daughters June and Louise. Remains determined to succeed no matter the cost to those close to her. Requires a strong actor with skills in comic timing and a commanding stage presence able to portray Rose's humanity.

Louise/Gypsy Rose Lee
Female. 16-22. Mezzo; F#3-Eb5
Older often neglected daughter of Mama Rose. Doesn't share the desire for fame of her mother and sister June. Requires a strong actor able to portray the quiet tomboy Louise and transform into the star of burlesque Gypsy Rose Lee. Must be willing to strip. Strong singer/dancer.

June
Female. 14-21. Alto/Mezzo Belt; G3-F5
Youngest daughter of Rose and star of the family's act. Despite her love of performing she grows tired of the vaudeville circuit and yearns for a new life away from her mother. Requires a triple threat able to portray both the 'Dainty June' of vaudeville and the daughter who feels suffocated by her mother. Strong singer/dancer.

Baby June
Female. Child 7-11. Mezzo F4-E5
Pperpetual child star who exudes over confidence and is her mother Rose's favorite. Strong singer/dancer.

Young Louise
Female. Child 9-14. Mezzo E4-Eb5
Quiet, shy daughter of Rose who lacks the ambition and onstage ability of sister June. Just wants to settle in one place with her family.

Herbie
Male, 35-45, Baritone F3-A#4
Rose's partner & manager of the family's act. Strong actor with singing ability able to portray the complex relationship he has with Rose.

Tulsa
Male, 17-24, Baritone F3-G4
One of the boys in Rose's act. Dreams of his own act in “All I Need is The Girl” & ultimately leaves Rose & elopes with June. Must be strong dancer with some proficiency in tap.

Tessie Tura
Female, Over 25. Mezzo Bb3-Db5
One of the strippers Gypsy encounters in her early days, shows her skills in Ballet stripping during the show-stealing number “You Gotta Get a Gimmick”.

Mazzeppa
Female, Over 25. Mezzo Bb3-Db5
One of the strippers Gypsy encounters in her early days. Her ‘gimmick’ that she portrays during the show-stealing number “You Gotta Get a Gimmick” is her skills on the Trumpet.

Electra
Female. Over 25. Mezzo G3-Db5
One of the strippers Gypsy encounters in her early days. She puts on a electrifying lightbulb display during the show-stealing number “You Gotta Get a Gimmick”.

Agnes
Female. 20-30. Non singing. One of the Toreadorables. Naïve dancer who wants to be a star.

Farmboys
Boys or girls, 8-12. Singing & dancing young boys who backup Baby June’s vaudeville act.

Male. 25-30. Tenor Bb2-Bb4
Romantic young man; former leader of the Jets. Has found a new lifestyle now. Finds himself violently torn between his friendships and love. Falls in love to Maria & meets an untimely death. Genuinely sweet & sincere.

Maria
Female, 18-22. Soprano Bb3-C6
Hopeless romantic & innocent young girl. Falls in love with Tony; finds herself at the center of the violent conflict between the two gangs. Bernardo's sister. Puerto Rican.

Riff
Male. 25-30. Tenor Bb2-G4
Spritely, quick-tempered leader. Seeks to eliminate the Sharks and establish his own gang's dominance. Tony's best friend; eventually murdered by Bernardo. Strong dancer.

Anita
Female, 25-30. Mezzo F3-D5
Feisty & assertive. Dispenses older sister advice to Maria and tries to shield her from the dangers of the gangs. Bernardo's girlfriend & Maria's friend. Puerto Rican. Strong dancer.

Bernardo
Male, 25-35. Baritone Bb2-Eb4
Proud, strong, handsome Puerto Rican man. Seeks to carve out territory as a sense of identity for he & his friends. Maria's brother & Anita's boyfriend. Leader of the Sharks. Strong dancer.

Chino
Male, 20-25. Baritone Bb2-Eb4
An angry and, at times, naive Shark who turns murderous and vengeful. Suitor to Maria & friend of Bernardo's. Strong dancer.

Action
Male. 20-25, Baritone G2-G4
Most aggressive member of the Jets, a cat-like ball of fury. Strong dancer.

Anybodys
Female, 15-25. Spoken. Spunky tomboy desperate to become a member of the Jets. The other Jets mock her for her ambitions, but generally appreciate her company. Full of energy and heart. Strong dancer.

Detective Schrank
Male. Over 40. Spoken. Local police detective frustrated by ongoing violence between Jets & Sharks. Blunt, brash, unapologetic.

Doc
Male. Over 50. spoken
Owner of candy store where the Jets hang out. Tries to guide the Jets youthful angst & provides a safe haven for Tony. Old fashioned & wise in his ways.

Officer Krupke
Female, 30-60, spoken.
Local beat cop. Has no patience for the gangs’ conflict; tries to keep tensions from errupting between them. Regularly mocked by the local gangs.

Glad Hand
Male, 35-50, spoken. Nerdy, overly cheerful, ill-equipped social director at the local gym dance.

JETS:

Diesel
Male 25-30, Baritone G2-G4. Lieutenant to Riff, big, slow, steady. Strong dancer.

Baby John:
Male 17-22. Baritone Bb2-G4. Youngest member of the Jets, awed at everything, even being a Jet; tries to act like a big man, but vulnerable. Strong dancer.

A-Rab
Male. 19-22, Baritone Db3-G4. Small of stature, enjoys everything, takes nothing seriously, unaware, can be explosive. Strong dancer.

Snowboy
Male, 19-22, Baritone F3-G4. Bespectacled, self-styled expert. Strong dancer.

Velma
Female, 20-25, Mezzo, Riff’s girlfriend, young, slithery, sexy, great dancer lost in a world of jive.

Graziella
Female, 20-25, Mezzo. Girlfriend of Diesel, great dancer and impressed with herself.

Pepe
Male, 20-25. Baritone G2-G4. Lieutenant to Bernardo, typically proud, and resentful of discrimination. Strong dancer.

Indio
Male, 22-26, Baritone. Typically proud, resentful of discrimination. Strong dancer.

Luis
Male, 22-26. Baritone. Similar to Luis (extremely prideful of himself and his heritage). Strong dancer.

Juano
Male. 22-26. Baritone. Also very prideful & defensive against discrimination. Strong dancer.

Toro
Male. 22-26. Baritone. Proud & resentful towards discrimination. Strong dancer.

Consuelo
Female. 20-25. Mezzo Tough, young Puerto Rican girl with bleach blond hair. Flirty and fun. Strong dancer.

Rosalia
Female. 19-25. Mezzo. Young Puerto Rican girl, more demure, not too bright. Homesick for Puerto Rico. Strong dancer.
