| Breakdown
WENDLA: One of the boys’ childhood friends. Woefully ignorant of her own sexuality, she falls for Melchior and, after consummating her relationship with him, gets pregnant. She dies after her mother forces her to have an abortion. MARTHA: One of Wendla’s friends whose father sexually abuses her. Martha’s mother knowingly allows the abuse to happen. THEA: Another of Wendla’s friends who is willing to let the adults suppress her sexual desires. ANNA: Another of Wendla’s friends who is horrified by Martha’s abuse and wants to tell other adults about it. She hopes that her future children will be healthy and free. ILSE: Another of Wendla’s childhood friends who left her sexually abusive home to become a wandering Bohemian. She represents Moritz’s last hope. MELCHIOR: A handsome, radical, and headstrong student who is much more educated than his peers because he reads books. After getting Wendla pregnant, he is sent to reform school and keeps his will to live, despite the tragic deaths of Wendla and Moritz. MORITZ: Melchior’s nervous, insecure friend who is terrified by erotic dreams. He struggles in school under intense pressure from his teachers and father, and after failing his midterm exams, kills himself. HANDSCHEN: One of Melchior’s classmates who is funny and arrogantly charming. He seduces Ernst effortlessly. ERNST: One of Melchior’s naïve classmates who falls in love with Handschen and, despite being afraid, allows Handschen to seduce him. GEORG: One of Melchior’s classmates who longs for his sexy, mature piano teacher. OTTO: One of Melchior’s classmates who, to the amusement of Melchior and Moritz, had an erotic dream of his mother. RUPERT: One of Melchior’s crude reform school classmates, who leads a gang in taunting Melchoir by reading a letter Wendla sent to Melchior telling him she is pregnant. REINHOLD: One of Melchior’s reform school classmates who follows the lead of the other boys. DIETER: One of Melchior’s reform school classmates who leads a group of boys in a circle jerk and taunts Melchior. ULBRECHT: One of Melchior’s reform school classmates who steals Wendla’s letter from Melchior’s pocket. ** NOTE: all Boy roles except Melchior and Moritz will be doubled.
