Based on Kate Davis’s Sundance award-winning documentary of the same name. Modern-day musical folk tale that tells the story of female-to-male transgender Robert Eads, an exuberant good ol’ boy living with ovarian cancer in the back hills of “Bubba Land” Georgia. Surrounded by a unique community of friends, and with his girl Lola Cola at his side, Robert and his tight-knit “Chosen Family” navigate the everyday trials of love and heartache in the face of everyday ignorance and bigotry. A year in a life leading up to the transgender cotillion in Atlanta, the piece paints a bold portrait of people who blur lines, shatter boundaries and transform perception simply through their audacity to love and their refusal to be anything other than themselves. Recipient of two separate NAMT grants and a top-10 finalist for the Richard Rodgers Award. The roles of Robert Eads and Lola Cola are cast (with Annette O’Toole and Jeff McCarthy, respectively).

Seeking:

Maxwell:

Seeking a male actor to play a female-to-male transgender, late 30s - mid 40s. Maxwell is an elfish man. Robert lovingly calls him a leprechaun. Tough, backwoods-looking-type guy who is not afraid of

confrontation. Full of warmth and mischief, but struggling with a deep resentment and anger at the world around him. Has a father/son-type relationship with Robert. Tenor with a natural, folky voice.

Cori:

Seeking a female actor to play a male-to-female transgender, late 20s – mid 30s. Cori is sexy, feminine, fun and confident. Maxwell’s girlfriend. Good-humored and kind. Strong libido. Naughty Catholic schoolboy turned naughty Catholic schoolgirl. Newcomer to this specific group of transsexuals. Mezzo belter with an edge.

Cass:

Seeking a male actor to play female-to-male transgender, late 30s – late 40s. Cass is introverted, masculine but soft and kind. A teddy bear of a man; a gentle giant perhaps. A man of few words, who likes to fix and build things. Might almost be intimidating, were it not for his extremely gentle and somewhat sad demeanor. Baritenor. Natural, folky voice with weight and warmth.

Stephanie:

Woman, mid 40s - early 50s. Spirited and full of good humor, but fragile and apprehensive of the world around her. Comes off oddly conservative and old fashioned in a blue-collar way. Has lived a hard life, and it shows. A survivor; married seven times to many emotionally and physically abusive men. In a relationship with Cass. Very protective and maternal, but fearful of the consequences of being associated with this transsexual community. Mezzo with a natural, folky voice.
