1st reh: 6/6/11. Rehearses M-Th eves and Sundays, with some flexibility. Runs 7/11-7/31 (6 perfs total) as part of the Midtown Internat’l Theatre Festival.

Story of African American women, told through popular music -- from “God Bless’ the Child” to Destiny's Child. Using popular music to trace the development of black women from the oppression of the 1930s through the girl groups of the 60s to empowerment in the 90s, this soulful and fun show takes the audience on a musical journey from pain to power.

Seeking:

Note: All must be strong singers in musical theater, pop and R&B styles.

Gloria:

African American, late 20s - 40s.

Tamika:

African American woman, about 21. High school grad. Grew up in the projects. Dresses hip.

Roberta:

African American, 20s - 30s. She wants everyone to see how bad things are. Actress also plays Angela Davis.

Simone:

African American. Late 30s or early 40s. College-educated. Wants to see the positive in everything.

Caucasian Female Characters:

One woman plays multiple characters, teens – 40s. Prejudiced in the beginning; later, she wants to understand racism and embrace black culture.
