SIDENOTE: The production will utilize a range of dialects [a variety of classes of British; Welsh; Scottish; Italian; French. Actors should be encouraged to show their ability to work with dialect in the scenes.
Imogen:
Female or Male. Mid to late 20s . Beautiful young woman with a strong inner moral compass, and fierce backbone. She was raised to rule the kingdom. Excellent language skills. [Note: I imagine this played by a young woman, but if there were exceptional young men who could actually be convincing without commenting in the role, it could be interesting for the whole company to be played by men.]
The Pianist:
Male, 40s-60s – accomplished pianist/actor, any ethnicity, minorities encouraged. Earthy. Weary and worn around the edges. Whatever his ethnicity he has soul, depth, wisdom. He needs to be a compelling storyteller, and comfortable taking on additional roles within the story. Strong language skills, dialects.
Posthumus/Cloten/Belarius:
Male, 30s/40s: Handsome; extremely versatile, strong language skills, grounded, masculine. Hot tempered; big heart. He plays the most admired man in the kingdom, love to the Princess; the doltish idiot son of the Queen; and a battle-scarred old soldier.
Queen/Iachimo/Arviragus:
Male, 30s/40s: Extremely versatile, strong language skills; Has to have an inner intensity/ ruthlessness. NOTE: He plays the Queen, but I’m not looking for any ‘comment’ on the gender switch. Just the tough/ruthlessness of the person who wants the throne. Also plays a conniving Italian soldier; and a rambunctious country lad.
