Sylvia: 20’s Female. Human embodiment of a young dog. Sexy and playful, eager to please and very loyal, wears her emotions on her sleeve. In love with Greg.
Greg: Mid 40’s, going through a midlife re-examination. Weary of his 9-5 job. A good husband and father.
Kate: Mid 40’s. Married to Greg. A driven women, following her dream of teaching after her kids have all left for college. Fighting for her husband’s love and support for this new phase of her life.
Tom: 40’s male. Obsessed with dog-owner culture and etiquette. Fierce advocate of dog- human relationships. Also plays Phyllis: 40’s female. Old friend of Kate’s, a woman of NY society. Managing her tribulations with alcohol. Also plays Leslie: 40’s, ambiguous gender. Kate’s counselor.

Marty Kreisberg: Female, 55. A Creative Drama teacher at the community center, desperate for her students to make a connection. Sees herself as very open minded.
James: Male, 56. Married to Marty. Former hippie and a current economics teacher, James is a strong and complex man grappling with his relationship with his wife and daughter.
Schultz: Male, 48. A divorcée and hopeless romantic looking for a fresh attitude in life. A carpenter, an artist.
Theresa: Female, 35. Former actress, searching for herself. A magnetic personality, Theresa struggles to control her sometimes self-sabotaging generosity.
Lauren: Female, 16, Irish and Lebanese. An observant introvert and dedicated worker with a complicated home life. A dreamer with the wide-eyed hopes of a high school junior.

Pete: late 30’s Early 40’s, male. Mary’s husband. Good looking, trim. A good and caring husband and father to his sons, but never afraid of a fight. Also plays assorted friends and caretakers of Mary.
Paul: Late 20’s, male. Also plays Paul from age 9. Athletic. Older brother. Tries hard to live up to the expectations of his family. Also plays Dr. West: / Dr. Polycarp: Mary and Pete’s doctors.
Bill: Mid 20’s, male. Actor must have the ability to truly connect with audience. Three years younger than Paul. Priest, writer, caretaker for his mother. Tells the story with a dry wit, but doesn’t shy away from the deep emotion.

Late 20’s to late 40’s male. Actor plays multiple characters and must be a chameleon comfortable with heightened language. Jailor: Vulgar, unconcerned with personal hygiene. Charles II: The King, a witty politician and a flattering playboy, love-struck by Aphra’s beauty and poetry. William Scott: Opportunistic, a bad liar, in pursuit of freedom.
Early to late 20’s female. Actress must have excellent transformation skills and a comic facility with heightened language. Nell Gwynne: A great actress with a pronounced tomboyish sexuality who will do anything to make her art. An open book, an optimist. Maria: loyal servant to Aphra, quick witted, rough around the edges. Lady Davenant: Theatre owner’s widow. A woman with great lung capacity.

Bev: 40’s, white female. Married to Russ. A chatty, middle class housewife. Sympathetic problem solver and relentless hostess/Also plays Kathy: Lawyer and friend to Lindsey and Steve. Outspoken and unapologetic.
Francine: Late 30’s, African American. Her outward polite and dutiful actions thinly veil a strong character that resents working for Russ and Bev./Also plays Lena: Composed, with something to prove. Passionate about her community.
Albert: Late 30’s, African American male. A genuinely good intentioned, friendly peacemaker. Married to Francine. Endearingly oblivious to social cues./Also plays Kevin: Lawyer married to Lena. Protective of his wife.
Jim: Late 20’s, white male. Minister. Proud of his status as counselor and comforter and is eager to employ his skills. Knows the American Sign Language alphabet./ Tom: Lawyer. Not overtly gay. Confident about his opinion on the good of the community. Pragmatic. /Also plays Kenneth: Son of Russ and Bev.
Karl Linder: Late 30’s, white male. Fluent in American Sign Language. Determined and verbose, he is unafraid of articulating his opinions./Also plays Steve: Married to Lindsey. Young upwardly mobile professional. Not interested in fighting, but not incapable when it comes to it.
Betsy Linder: Late 20’s, female. Fluent in American Sign Language. Married to Karl. Totally deaf, eight months pregnant. Sweet and dutiful housewife. Never gets all of the information going on around her. /Also plays Lindsey: Visibly pregnant. An ambitious young professional. Has a strong idea of what it is to do things right. Genuinely sensitive and courteous until provoked.
