Fuddy Meers by David Lindsay-Abaire

Claire: an amnesiac in her mid to late 40’s who, despite her daily struggle to remember the who’s, what’s, when’s, where’s, why’s and how’s, has a sunny and somewhat innocent disposition. During her day long journey of self discovery she is inquisitive and enthusiastic, but she never quite manages to clarify all of life’s mysteries. She is married, in fact, more than once, and is the mother of an arrogant, self indulgent 17 year old son, Kenny.

Richard: a medical technician in his mid to late 40’s who is married to Claire. He is an extremely patient, well-meaning husband and father who calmly reeducates Claire and raises his petulant son, Kenny, every day. But, despite his veneer of political correctness, there are secrets and mysteries hidden within that explode to the surface in the course of the play.

Kenny: CAST. Auditioning performers will be considered as possible (emergency) replacements, should any become necessary. the 17 year old son of Claire and Richard, Kenny is a spoiled, arrogant, self indulgent pot head who may have reason to be all of those things. Though appearing to be a whining, sniveling wimp, Kenny reaches down in the course of the play to discover new strengths he didn’t even know he had.

Limping Man: an escaped prisoner in his mid to late 40’s, Zach, or is it Philip, is Claire’s brother, or is he her one time husband? He is truly disabled, having a disfigured ear, a hearing impairment, a severe lisp and a pronounced limp. But these are only the external scars; his psychological wounds are just as profound and add to the secrets and mystery of the character and play.

Gertie: CAST. Auditioning performers will be considered as possible (emergency) replacements, should any become necessary. :the late 60’s or early 70’s mother of Claire who has recently suffered a debilitating stroke. The stroke has impaired Gertie’s speech, making it difficult to understand her. Unlike the other characters, however, Gertie knows the family secrets but is unable to communicate them.

Millet: 30‘s-40‘s, another escaped convict, Millet is the side-kick of the Limping Man who is unable to unburden himself except through the foul mouthed sock puppet who is his constant companion. Millet is presented with the pieces of his mystery but is unable to put them together until the events of this day unfold.

Heidi: is a 30 to 40-something lady to whom life has not been generous. She has been “ridden hard and put away wet” on more than one occasion. She is not what she appears to be and nor are the circumstances. She thinks her ship is about to come in but there are plans she is not privy to that will again deny her the brass ring.
