Performers of all ethnicities and gender identities are encouraged to audition for all roles.
Venue: The Whitley (on Hollywood Blvd)
Please come prepared to dance. You will dance first. There may be a cut. Those that are kept will be asked to sing a short version of something appropriate to the style of the show. Please have sheet music in the key in which you intend to sing. Also, bring your headshot and resume stapled together.

REEFER MADNESS
About the show: This is a revival of the award-winning stage musical that originated in Hollywood in the late 1990’s. The authors have retooled the show for 2024 with a revised book and several new songs.
[THE LECTURER/JACK/JESUS/FDR] – Male, 30s – 50s, any ethnicity, tenor, character actor, dance abilities a plus but not a dealbreaker. The narrator and director of this rinky-dink WPA Project play which travels from town-to-town scaring depression-era parents about the dangers of Reefer Madness; He carries himself with great gravitas and authority. He shows a charming face to his audience but is ruthless and cruel when challenged. The Lecturer doubles as several roles in his play, including: JACK STONE, a flashy, charismatic hood that pushes reefer on unsuspecting teenagers with pre-code zeal; JESUS CHRIST, a blend of sexy Tom Jones and that scared straight ex-con who once spoke at your high school; PRESIDENT FRANKLIN DELANO ROOSEVELT, chipper and optimistic; Also doubles as: GOAT-MAN, GEORGE WASHINGTON, OLD MAN, RADIO ANNOUNCER.
[JIMMY HARPER] – Male, 18+ to play high schooler, any ethnicity, tenor, light dancing required. A fine, upstanding American Boy in the grand spirit of Dobie Gillis until he falls victim to REEFER MADNESS! Naïve, sweet and a little gullible. While under the influence of reefer, he becomes twitchy, violent, and terrifying.
[MARY LANE] – Female, 18+ to play high schooler, any ethnicity, soprano, strong dancer. A perky, wholesome high-schooler who is hopelessly devoted to honor, fair play and mom's apple pie — until the DEMON WEED comes between her and her Reefer. Addled sweetheart. Steadfastly devoted and virginal until she takes her first puff of reefer and loses all inhibition and self-control. Participates in ensemble numbers and doubles as TAP-DANCING BROWNIE.
[MAE COLEMAN] – Female, late 20s – 40s, any ethnicity, alto with a high belt, some dancing required. A fallen woman, the mistress of the Reefer Den. She was once an honor student until she fell prey to a handsome face and a smoldering stick of Pure Evil. Underneath her tough exterior bark beats a heart of gold. Barbara Stanwyck is a great template. Participates in ensemble numbers.
[SALLY DeBAIN] – Female, 20s, any ethnicity, soprano with a high belt, strong dancer. Sally is a sex kitten reefer addict along the lines of Ann-Margret or Judy Holiday. She has become accustomed to selling herself: body, soul, and yes, even her own baby, for the next hit of reefer. Glamorous, but in a seedy manner. Participates in ensemble numbers and doubles as POLICE OFFICER, PRISON GUARD, STATUE OF LIBERTY.
[RALPH WILEY] – Male, 20s – 40s, any ethnicity, character tenor, light dancing required, physical comedy helpful. Ralph is an ex-college student gone to seed, a hopeless reefer addict prone to fits of maniacal giggling. Spends most of his time south of the border of insanity. Participates in ensemble numbers and doubles as SALLY’S BABY, BULL PRISONER, UNCLE SAM.
[ENSEMBLE] – Seeking dynamic performers (any ethnicity and gender identity, 20s –30s) to play a wide variety of roles. Must be really good dancers as well as strong singers. Must cover principal roles:
FEMALE ENSEMBLE #1 (MATURE) covers MAE and possibly SALLY.
FEMALE ENSEMBLE #2 (YOUNGER) covers MARY and possibly SALLY.
MALE ENSEMBLE #1 (MATURE) covers LECTURER and possibly RALPH.
