Re: RED/AEA Submission
Red takes you into the studio of Mark Rothko, pioneer of abstract expressionism, and into the mind of an artist wrestling with the eternal struggle between art and commerce. Seen through the eyes of his young, increasingly challenging assistant, Rothko agonizes over a lucrative project painting murals for the new Four Seasons Restaurant. Has he sold out to fame and fortune or is he still a real artist?
Seeking:
Rothko
(50-65): The temperamental, brooding, brilliant artist at the height of his popularity but also at the cusp of his feeling out of date. Set in a New York studio in the late 1950s, the play tracks Rothko's relationship with a young studio assistant over a two year period when he was working on a commissioned series of paintings for the new Four Seasons restaurant. Rohko is man of fierce opinions who can turn didactic lessons into the most entertaining and emotionally volatile volleys. Actor must be masterful with language, able to plummet depths on a dime, funny, and ready for a powerhouse workout both physically and emotionally. Director is open to actors who have done the role of Rothko in the past as well as those who have not.
