WE IN SILENCE HEAR A WHISPER by Jon Kern. Dir: Melanie Moyer Williams. 1st reh: 9/1/11. Runs 10/6-10/23.
Introduces Halima, a courageous young girl living in a refugee camp in Sudan. Disguised as a boy, Halima searches the lawless wilds to find the remains of her brother in order to give rest to his soul. To survive on this journey, Halima must summon all the guile and magic she has to escape the pursuit of the malevolent, nameless man who seems to be around every corner. Puppets are also used in this production, both as characters and scenic elements.
Halima:
Seeking actress 18+ to play a 14-year-old African (Darfuri) girl. Halima is a girl disguised as a boy (actress must be willing to have extremely short hair). Speaks in direct address a majority of the time. Very smart, cunning, youthful soul who was forced to grow up much too fast
Man On The Horse:
African man, 30s. Janjaweed soldier. Mysterious, strong, powerful, ruthless soldier who searches all over to kill Halima.
Chidi / Jean-Pierre / Tiny Man On A Tiny Horse:
Seeking an actor 18+ who can play both age 15 and mid – late 20s. Chidi: Halima’s brother. Jean-Pierre: African Union peacekeeper. Tiny Man on a Tiny Horse: In Halima's mind, this is the Man on the Horse that she can control.
Helene / Mom / Mrs. Gunderson:
One actor plays all three Caucasian female characters, 30s/40s. Helene: French. Documentary filmmaker. Mom: “All American. Gunderson: US State Department official.
Emile / Vice Minister Chou:
One actor plays both male characters, early 30s. Emile: Parisian doctor of Chinese descent. Chou: Official in China’s Ministry of Energy.
Two or Three Puppeteers:
Wide experience, especially with shadow puppets.
Winter production TBD. Runs 1/26 – 2/13/12.
Spring production TBA. Dir: Kel Haney. Runs 4/12 – 4/29/12.
