RAFTA, RAFTA... centers on a contemporary close-knit Indian family in northern England. After their wedding feast, two nervous newlyweds are ready for some privacy, but the groom's father doesn't want the party to end and his brother won't leave them alone. Before long, the groom and his new bride begin to realize that having a honeymoon in his parents' house is not the ideal recipe for romance.
*ALL ACTORS (except Molly Bhatt) SHOULD CONVINCINGLY PLAY EAST INDIAN.
**STRONG BRITISH DIALECT NECESSARY FOR ALL ROLES
Eeshwar Dutt:
Male. 55. The father of the family and a show-off; jovial, big energy, masculine; the life of every party: sings, dances and likes his drink. Has a deeper and sadder soul underneath his bluster. A more traditionally masculine man than his son, Atul, he has made a home for himself in Bolton and wants what is best for his family. He has trouble connecting to anything outside his somewhat narrow worldview although he has the capacity to try. Intensely loyal to his friends.
Lopa Dutt:
Female. 49. Eeshwar’s wife and Atul and Jai’s mother. The family matriarch and a natural born mother; nurturing and protective; keeps her family together. Unsentimental, realistic and capable of using her authority when need be. Has a good sense of humor about the follies of her husband, but also knows when he has gone too far. She loves her family, which can be seen through her control of the household.
Atul Dutt:
Male. 22. Eeshwar and Lopa’s eldest son. Atul marches to a different drummer (he listens to classical music and watches old Indian films) than the rest around him and is often caught between what is expected of him and what he truly wants. Sensitive. Attractive in a sensitive, artistic way. Wants a better life than his father and mother, but as not yet identified what that might be or how to get there. Can show his immaturity in handling adult situations. Sometimes too proud; keeps many of his problems “locked up inside,” and finds it difficult to ask for help.
Jai Dutt:
Male. 18. Jai is the younger son of the Dutt family. Confident, witty, sassy and laid-back, Jai is a natural ladies man and idolizes his father. Likes to tease and joke yet also well-meaning. Somewhat immature but will make his parents proud when he grows up a bit more. A good son. More typically attractive, athletic than Atul.
Vina Patel:
Female. 21. Vina is the only child of Lata and Laxman. Often gets caught in the middle of her parents’ bickering, but remains much closer to her father. Well-balanced and emotionally open young woman with a sense of humor. Very much in love with her new husband. Possesses a shy sexuality but modern and outgoing when relaxed and away from elders.
Lata Patel:
Female. 45. Stern and traditional; jealous of her husband’s close relationship with Vina; can be aggressive and bossy. She may not fully understand why her husband is so distant, and is perhaps hoping when Vina moves out that they will become closer again. Wants what is best for her daughter but is not close to her.
Laxman Patel:
Male. 50. Can come off as cold and starchy with all but his daughter whom he relentlessly dotes on at the expense of his relationship with his wife; traces of bitterness; more distant and anal than Eeshwar. Loves his only daughter and wants what is best for her, but misses her more selfishly than his wife. More nattily dressed and put together than Eeshwar.
Etash Tailor:
Male. 22. Atul’s best friend; unquestionably loyal; likes to have a laugh. Smart & knowledgeable about the cinema. Less cerebral than Atul; perhaps slightly less attractive than Atul.
Jivaj Bhatt:
Male. 39. Manager of the Roxie cinema, where Atul and Etash are projectionists. Loud, immature, crude; a natural bully, but cowers when in trouble with his wife. Masculine.
Molly Bhatt:
Female. Caucasian. 35. Jivaj’s white British wife; has adapted well to the Asian culture.; straight-talking and wears the pants in her marriage. Sassy and fun yet also sympathetic to Atul’s plight.
