seeking:
Jack Lawson:
Caucasian man, late 30s – 40s. Ambitions, smart, charismatic. Confident. Top of his game. He says he and his law partner, Henry, have succeeded by being “fast, being first and ripping off the band aid”. He genuinely believes that he is immune to racism and sexism because he understands the complexities inherent in these issues.
Henry Brown:
African-American man, late 30s - to early to mid 40s. Smart. Engaging. Assured. Compassionate. Blunt. Talented lawyer. Top of his game. Comes from a working class family and has worked hard to achieve his many successes. Believes law is “not and exercise in metaphysics. But an alley fight.”
Susan:
African-American woman, in her late 20s. First year lawyer. Smart. Ambitious. Recipient of a scholarship to an Ivy League school. Wrote her college thesis on the “Structural Survivals of Racism in Supposedly Bias-free Transactions”. Passionately eager to learn, to be a good lawyer, to be a member of a successful firm…..but also to see if the real world confirms her thesis.
Charles Strickland:
Caucasian man, in his mid-late 40s to early 50s. Extremely wealthy and moves through life with the quiet reserve or grace of the rich. Elegant manners. Accused of raping an African American woman in a hotel (and we should believe the actor is physically capable of doing this). He believes he is innocent but wants the world to understand that he is sensitive to the complexities of racism and that in some way he is complicit in the bigger crime of racism in general.
