Seeking:

Henry Brown:

A black man in his 40s. A high powered, high priced, fast thinking defense attorney. He is a partner with Jack Lawson, a white attorney and is very clear-eyed about his role as a black man in a world dominated by whites. He can be the upper middle class, well spoken lawyer or the cynical, down and dirty attack dog needed to break the client to get to the truth. He looks for the worst in people and usually finds it.

Jack Lawson:

A white man in his 40s. He is a high powered, high priced defense attorney, but still down to earth as a man. When his partner gets in down and dirty mode, he can seem like the measured, thoughtful, philosophical member of the team. He is an analytical and strategic thinker but a blunt spoken man. He doesn’t want to accept any case unless he is sure the firm can win it.

Charles Strickland:

A white man who can be 40 – 55. A wealthy, patrician man accused of raping a black woman. He wants this firm to represent him and he wants them to believe he is innocent. He is vulnerable for perhaps the first time in his life and he is coming to the realization that his wealth and position in society cannot help him… smart lawyers can.

Susan:

A black woman in her 20s. Susan is a recent and highly intelligent law school graduate who just joined the firm. She is attractive, smart and eager to learn from these partners and wants to do a good job. She believes everyone is entitled to a defense. This case tests that belief and also tests her loyalty to the firm. She is just beginning to learn about the conflicts that exist between her identities as a person and a lawyer.
