Artistic Director Kate Whoriskey (RUINED, THE PIANO TEACHER, Broadway’s THE MIRACLE WORKER) directs a production of this classic with a modern eye that will star Daniel Breaker as “Christy Mahon”. After Mahon stumbles into a small town tavern and confesses he’s just killed his father, the quiet country town awakens and flocks to this dangerous stranger, treating him like royalty. That is until his father rolls into town after him alive.
Seeking:
Old Mahon:
Late 40s-60s – African American – Boastful, gruff, slightly dim, and inadvertently funny. He is in pursuit of his son, Christy, for having beaten him in the head. He likes to show off his busted skull and bandages. He is surprisingly resilient and wise in his straight forward simple-ness.
Michael James Flaherty:
40s – Peegen’s father. A rowdy, jolly, jovial tavern owner in a small town. He loves to drink and finds opportunity to do so frequently at local wakes.
Margaret “Peegen Mike” Flaherty:
Early-mid 20s – A witty girl capable of taking care of herself with an independent spirit who knows what she desires when she desires it, but also a girl who has a lot of fear inside. When she first meets Christy he seems heroic to her because he appears fearless and she falls in love with him. After Christy leaves town she ultimately will choose to stay alone rather than marry the spineless Shawn in order to maintain the purity of her love and connection to Christy even if they will never be together and she will have to live with her fear alone.
Widow Quinn:
Mid 30s – A savvy and strong woman. She is famous in town for having killed her own husband. She is sexy by virtue of her strength and know-how. Quinn is shrewd and her only real alliance is to herself. She likes Christy and tries to court him both because of a bargain she makes with Shawn who wants Quinn to seduce Christy away from Peegen and to fulfill her own desire for Christy.
Philly Cullen:
Late 30s-late 40s – A farmer in town. Distrustful. A guy’s guy. Boisterous, a lover of drinking (which he also finds at local wakes) and a tough character. Can be a bit thuggy, contemptuous and scary.
Jimmy Farrell:
Late 30s- late 40s – A farmer in town. Amorous. A guy’s guy. Boisterous, a lover of drinking (which he also finds at local wakes) and a tough character. Can be a bit thuggy and intimidating.
