Breakdown
Her husband wants her dead, but Marion’s too busy to notice. The North London real estate market is booming, and she’s out to make a killing. Her loyal young protégé—a would-be suicide who can’t quite seal the deal—is happy to do her dirty work until he gets a better offer. When Marion discovers she can’t buy out a family from one of her properties, she instead takes ownership of their most prized possession.
Staged by OBIE Award winning resident director Evan Yionoulis (2013’sStones in His Pockets by Marie Jones), Owners is the savagely funny play by groundbreaking English playwright Caryl Churchill, author of Cloud Nine and Top Girls.
CLEGG (40’s, 50’s): Once-attractive. Butcher. Married to Marion. Wants her exclusive attentions but planning her demise. Regular guy with a lunatic streak.
WORSELY (early 20’s): A serially unsuccessful suicide. The nervous type. Works for Marion and in love with her. Does her real estate dirty work. Engaged by Clegg to murder her.
MARION (30’s): Successful, ruthless property developer. Married to Clegg. Alec’s former paramour. Had a stay in a mental hospital after their break up. Determined now to have him back or make him go. “Onward Christian Soldiers” is her theme song. She’s a fighter, a winner. But Alec is unmovable.
LISA (late 20’s): “Weak, pretty face.” Alex’s wife. Works washing hair in a salon. Struggling with the stress of three children and an aging mother-in-law. Trying not to crack under Worsely and Marion’s pressure.
ALEC (30’s): Has let go of all desire. Refuses to fight for anything. Except his mum. And then even his mum. An act of heroism is his downfall.
AELC’S MOTHER (70’s): Frail. Senile. May double as Customer 2.
MRS. ARLINGTON (20’s): Well-dressed. Well-bred. Doesn’t let a new baby stop her from regular evenings out. May double as Customer 1.
