Breakdown
Othello: 30 - 55. Career soldier, a natural leader and commander, someone other men want to follow. A powerful presence and a rich voice, sensual, sexual. He can’t be a fuse waiting to be lit. He is totally in love with Desdemona and she with him. We need to believe that the attraction is physical as well as spiritual. His overwhelming love for her combined with an awareness of his “otherness” in this society and a sense of honor defined by a life in the military leads to his downfall.
Emilia: Late 30’s - 40’s. She can be 10 years older than Iago. There is a sense of desperation about her in regards to her strained relationship with Iago that being older than her husband might help convey. Grounded, passionate and sensual, a woman whose still waters run deep, who has lived with mistreatment yet still loves her husband. A mother figure for Desdemona.
Lodovico: 25 - 35. “A very handsome man”. Sophisticated, urbane, decadent, rich, upper class.
Bianca: 25 – 30. Preference will be given to African-American or non-Caucasian actresses. Courtesan. Sexual, sensual, volatile. Will need to be able to belly dance.
Cassio: 23 - 35. Well-bred, tall and good-looking, intelligent, honorable but flawed. He’s hotheaded, comes from a wealthy background and has strict notions of class separation. He thinks well of himself and has more than his share of hubris. Today he’d be a Yale man and the captain of the football team—the bright, rich kid for whom things have come easily. We need to look at him and understand Othello’s jealousy. Cassio is the guy everyone would expect Desdemona to be with.
Montano: 35 - 45, a mature man, career soldier and commander.
Roderigo: 25 - 35. Don’t think of him or cast him as a fop or lightweight comedian. We need to feel his obsession for Desdemona. He can become dangerous because of this, and it’s his obsession that makes him foolish and susceptible to Iago’s manipulations. He’s not inherently a fool. He has to have enough strength to challenge Iago’s limits of invention. He is a man of some breeding and wealth: his class leads him to believe he’s a good candidate for Desdemona.
Brabantio: 40 - 50. Father-type. We need to feel his grief and heartbreak over his daughter’s betrayal, not just his outrage and anger. He breaks down in the I.3 Senate scene. Autocratic, imperious, used to always getting his own way, rich.
Desdemona: must read as young (18 - 20) but not as a child. She’s pure, not stupid. Refined, upper class, wealthy, spirited, passionate. “My heart is subdued even to the utmost pleasure of my lord”: this is her essence. Must be able to sing. Please be ready with 16 bars a capella in the audition.
Gratiano: Brabantio’s brother (40 - 50+ range). Solid, wealthy businessman.
Ensemble tracks include: Roman Catholic Priest, Altar boy, Senators (I.3), Belly dancers, Soldiers, Messenger. If you wish to audition for ensemble, please come prepared with either sides for Cassio or Roderigo.
NOTE: The roles of The Duke and Iago have been cast.
