| Breakdown
Two male actors with a strong background and facility in classical piano. The older actor will play excerpts from Robert Schumann's"Dichterliebe" at various times in the play. The younger actor will play excerpts from"Dichterliebe" as well as excerpts from Tchaikowsky,Liszt, Beethoven, and Bach. (Note: this play is often performed with a speaker in the piano and the actors faking it. In the Colony production, the playing will be live.) Any actor whose resume demonstrates this ability will be offered an audition. PROFESSOR MASHKAN - male, mid-50's - early 60's. A warm and seemingly enthusiastic presence with a nearly Yiddish sense of humor. His passion for music (particularly opera) is deeply invested in what it is to be alive despite having been a Holocaust survivor. He carries the weight of his tragedy as a very private memory. Must have a flair for accents and an ability to embrace the gemutlichkeit sensibility of Mashkan's romantic connection to the Old World. A proficient facility as a classical pianist is crucial. STEPHEN - male, with the appearance and demeanor of a 25-year-old (might be played by an actor in his 30's who can act and appear younger). Tense, burnt-out prodigy on piano with an almost phobic apprehension with regard to real human interaction. Stephen has an arrogance that is his way of keeping his inner turmoil at arm's length. An accomplished facility on classical piano is necessary since much of the story documents Stephen's transformative journey through his relationship to his art as a pianist. Singing ability is required but a great voice is not.
