PREPARATION

Please prepare a contemporary and classical monologue, both no more than two minutes long. Also, please bring your headshot and resume stapled together.

This is a one-week contract for actors rehearsing in Los Angeles and presenting for one day with a matinee and evening performance in Ventura.

There are no plans to have understudies for any roles.

EPA Procedures are in effect for this audition. An Equity Monitor will be provided.

New Arts City Theatre Festival 2024 Season

New Art City Theatre (NACT) says there are roles available for male, female, and non-binary actors of all ages and races.

New Art City Theatre (NACT) is seeking actors of all genders and races for Festival ’24, a weekend-long festival of staged readings of new plays and musicals. Selected from 175 nationwide submissions, NACT is in the process of identifying 3-4 projects all of which will be presented between April 25th and 28th at the Museum of Ventura County in downtown Ventura, CA.

The mission at New Art City Theatre is to forge a new path to opportunity for artists who create theatre. By giving equal access to diverse voices, and inviting a broader audience to join us, we aspire to elevate all that is compelling about original theatre and its ability to promote unity, inspire curiosity and provide joy.

NACT is committed to creating a welcoming work environment for writers, actors, and other theatre makers. NACT is an artist-driven organization, and diverse casting is a primary artistic goal.

The four shows selected are:

BLOWHOLE

By Aly Kantor

SYNOPSIS: A nautical, radical, silly and scintillating turn-of-the-century adaptation of Aristophanes' Lysistrata, set in a struggling whaling village during the doldrums period of the American suffrage movement.

SEEKING:

ELIZABETH: THE AGITATOR. Female identifying, any race, late 20s to late 30s. The principled proprietor of the Ardenview Inn. Smart as the day is long. A born agitator who wants a partner as strong willed as she is who will fight alongside her for progressive change.

MARINA: THE MAIDEN. Female identifying, any race, early to mid-20s. A besotted young mother struggling with invisibility.

CAROLINE: THE MOTHER. Female identifying, any race, late 20s to late 30s. A sheltered soul with a repressed knack for frying donuts and limited understanding of a romantic relationships.

LILLY: THE MATRON. Female identifying, any race, 30s to 40s. A stubborn, sardonic, worldly woman nursing a betrayal.

FLOSSIE: THE CRONE. Female identifying, any race, late 50s to late 70s. A grumpy old ghost and troublemaker. She sees solutions that younger eyes might miss.

EUGENE: Male identifying, any race, late 60s to late 70s. A hungry old shit-stirrer who is fond of clam chowder and has no domestic ability to take care of himself.

SIDNEY: Male identifying, any race, 30s to late 40s. Elizabeth’s husband, a first mate on a whaling ship. The romantic letters he sends home are written almost as much for himself as for his wife. He sees big potential in Elizabeth’s ideas but wants to have masculine power as well.

OTTO: Male identifying, any race, early to mid-20s. Marina’s husband, a Cooper who is powerfully attracted to his wife but doesn’t pay close attention to who she really is.

BILL: Male identifying, any race, 20s to 40s. Caroline’s husband, a nautical rigger with limited romantic skills.

RECONCILIATION

SYNOPSIS: “Is there a God?” This play follows a young man struggling with his faith in a world full of death, love, mistakes, compassion, abuse and loyalty.

SEEKING:

TIM RUSSELL: Male identifying, any race. Caring man with a physical disability who ages from 6 to 37. Tim has a terrific sense of humor and is known for always saying what is on his mind. Resilient. Stronger than he knows or admits. Willing to carry burdens that are not his.

AUNT MOLLY: Female identifying, any race. Tim’s Aunt, an astrophysicist, who ages from 28 to 59. As a gay woman, she has left the Catholic faith, but doesn’t judge others who remain faithful. Deeply devoted to Tim. She has a wonderful sense of humor.

FATHER MARTIN: Male identifying, any race. Extremely affable pastor at St. Mark’s Catholic parish. He is a stress-eater and his frame shows that. Sincere in his desire to help people but backs down when things are painful or uncomfortable. He ages from 31 to 57.

AMY JOHNSON: Female identifying, any race. A self-assured young woman who Tim meets at St. Mark’s Catholic Church. Centered. Warm and funny. She sees the good in the world when it can be hard to spot. She ages from 23 to 34.

TRACK 1: Female identifying, any race. Doubles as various roles: Mary (Tim’s sweet mother); Doctor (An obie-gynie Aunt Molly meets at an interfaith chapel at a hospital); Lisa (Tim’s first wife) and Liz (Aunt Molly’s friend who comes over to Aunt Molly’s house on Christmas Eve)

DROWNED CATS

SYNOPSIS: A dramatization of one very specific and very real impact of climate change on a regular
family, living their regular lives.

SEEKING:

EMMA HILL: Female identifying, any race, to play 72. Cantankerous old woman. Unwilling to acknowledge her physical frailties and bone-tired of life.

TAYLOR: Female identifying, any race, to play age 38. Emma’s daughter. Strong, but emotionally strung out. Trying to hold it together for everyone in her family circle.

IGGY: Male identifying, any race, to play age 16. Rebellious teen who has a lot of anger and a lot of empathy. His lower middle-class existence in a time of devastating weather events has worn him thin.

STACEY: Male identifying, any race, to play age 35. Taylor’s affable boyfriend. A really, really good guy with limited ability to multi-task, and enough smarts to recognize when he’s failing.

DEMITRI: Male identifying, any race, to play age 17. Iggy’s boyfriend. A bad influence, but not a bad human being. His criminal tendencies stem from neglect.

SWIMMING UP THE SUN

SYNOPSIS: An honest, dramatic journey into the heart of a woman’s experience with relinquishment and adoption, and the rollercoaster ride of family reunion. Adapted from the author’s memoir of the same name.

SEEKING:

NICKI: Female identifying, White. English adoptee and writer (to play 25). Loves her adoptive parents, but longs to find her roots and understand why she was given away. Smart. Warm. Direct and not afraid to ask for what she wants, even when the asking causes her physical pain.

ANGELA: Female identifying, White. Nicki’s half-sister, raised by Eve (to play 21). Upbeat and welcoming to Nicki. She understands Eve and gently helps Nicki to better accept her birth mother as is.

EVE: Female identifying, White. Nicki’s natural Mother, an artist (to play both 19 and 50). Strong - maybe rigid? Wants to love Nicki unconditionally, but also wants to protect her own heart.

PHILIP: Male identifying, Jewish. Nicki’s natural Father, a businessman (to play both his twenties and fifties). His older self is ready to receive the daughter he couldn’t claim when he was young.

MOO: Female identifying, White. Nicki’s adoptive Mother, a homemaker (plays both twenties and sixty-ish). Kind and compassionate. Not at all phased by Nicki’s desire to find her roots, but her drinking belies some emotional issues she is not sharing.

JAMES: Male identifying. Nicki’s African-American boyfriend/husband, a musician (30). Clear-eyed. Deeply in love with Nicki and supportive of her journey, though he sometimes worries her searching may distract her from their relationship.

ROGER: Male identifying, White. NICKI’s adoptive father (plays both twenties and sixty-ish). A good man who instigated the adoption.
