What really happened to The Crucible's Abigail Williams after she stole through Salem's forest one dark night in search of a new life and new beginning? Ten years have passed since the infamous witch trials, but Abigail still struggles to atone for her sins, the ones history remembers — and darker ones that live in her heart. As she cares for a young sailor on the brink of death, a mysterious stranger from Abigail's past catches up with her, sending her on one final, suspense-filled quest for redemption.

ABILGAIL WILLIAMS-Female; late 20’s (also referred to in the play as “Ruth Meadows”)--pretty/striking with a bold and forthright presence. Confident, manipulative and shrewd—she is haunted and guilt ridden by her past and her part in the Salem with trials. She id desperately searching for peace of mind and redemption.

JOHN BROWN-Male; mid-late 20’s; a young sailor who disguises his true identity as a pirate while being nursed back to health from the pox by Abigail. Strong, scruffy, handsome, masculine—conflicted, he now yearns for stability, a wife and children.

REVEREND PARRIS/JUDGE SEWELL/MAN IN GRAY-Male; 40-late 50’s; Authoritative, commanding, scholarly, powerful, complex, -- one actor will play the roles of REV. PARRIS (Abigail’s uncle, A Puritan minister whose fortune she stole), JUDGE SEWELL (who presided over the Salem witch trials and is now repentant for their outcome) and MAN IN GRAY (a dark, mysterious ominous figure with whom Abigail had a sacred pact)

ELIZABETH PROCTOR/MARGARET HALE/THE CRONE-Female: 40-late 50’s—one actress will play the roles of ELIZABETH PROCTOR (who, along with her husband, John Proctor were accused by Abigail of witchcraft)-A stand up woman, virtuous, proud but cold, MARGARET HALE-(a witchy-woman, who devoted her time and home to administering to those afflicted with the pox), CRONE (a local villager)

THOMAS-10-12; a young boy; sweet, unaffected; innocent

THE POWER OF DUFF
By Stephen Belber
Directed by Peter DuBois
1st Rehearsal: June 26, 2012
1st Performance: July 18, 2012
Closes: July 29, 2012

After the death of his father, Charlie Duff, a local TV news anchor, starts praying aloud for things to happen while reading the evening news. When his prayers start coming true, it begins a controversy on whether he's a prophet, a pundit or a charlatan.

CHARLES (Charlie) DUFF: Male; 40-50; a local upstate news anchorman. Handsome, charming, innately charismatic, masculine, well rounded—A slightly past his prime Golden Boy that missed an early shot at a high profile job with a major national network. Is now at a point in his life where he is desperately looking to reconnect with life, his ex-wife (and somewhat estranged son) and to something more universal.

SUE RASPELL; Female; 30’s; Charlie’s Co-Anchor. Pretty, smart, professional--if a bit too tightly wound. Compartmentalizes her personal life, her hidden emotions camouflaging the difficulties she is experiencing in her marriage and rising of her autistic son.

SCOTT ZOELLNER-Male; 30’s-early 40’s; the station manager and Charlie’s boss. A rising star at the network-a jerk who likes to appear humble. Shrewd, opportunistic

LISA: Female; 40’s; Charlie’s Ex-Wife. Warm, intelligent, pretty but not glamorous—a bit of a soccer mom. Was deeply hurt by Charlie’s infidelities and the break up of their marriage.

RICKY: Male; 15-16; Charlie’s son. Alternately moody/angry/sullen/sensitive—a teenager going through growing pains and the resentment he feels towards his father for breaking up the family. Although he wants to repair the relationship, he is reticent to open up and leave himself vulnerable. Actor should feel/look like a real suburban/upstate teenage-scruffy, awkward not slick or presentational. Must also have the facility to express a wide emotional range that is honest and complex.

ONE ACTOR; 30’s-40’s to play a variety of roles including: DAN HEGEMAN (a CNN executive), BOB (Charlie’s cousin from Oregon), RON KIRKPATRICK (a TV news reporter), TED (a studio technician), a BARTENDER, a MECHANIC, etc should be facile and versatile

JOHN EBBS:[CAST] Male; 30’s; the station’s sportscaster. A jovial outgoing gregarious guys guy. Verbal, funny, working class. His outward demeanor masks his deep insecurity and loneliness.

JOSEPH ANDAGO; [CAST] Male; 30-50; AFRICAN AMERICAN. A Nigerian immigrant dying from complications from AIDS. Frail, soft-spoken, educated, and usually a touch bemused. A warm, open and spiritual man with great dignity.
