Asher Lev:

(Male, 25-28). An ultra Orthodox Hasidic Jew and world famous artist. We see Asher from ages 6-28. Sensitive, sensual, pale, loyal, passionate, ambitious. A good boy with “a scream inside of him fighting to get out.” A genius torn between his family and his art, fighting to be forgiven. He has a quiet magnetism and is open, vulnerable, and passionate. Performs an intense physical “score” when he is “painting,” dance/movement training required.

Aryeh Lev / Jacob Kahn / Rebbe / Yitzchok:

Man. Should be extremely facile with dialects. Familiarity with Jewish culture, traditions, Hebrew, and Yiddish a plus. Plays the following four roles: Aryeh Lev: (Asher’s father, an ultra Orthodox Hasidic Jew of Russian heritage; pillar of the community, has fundamentalist zeal but is not a tyrant); Jacob Kahn: (Asher’s teacher and a renowned artist and sculptor; an Eastern European Jew who escaped the Nazis; bold and blunt with a lust for life and hunger for the truth); Rebbe: (leader of the Orthodox community; ancient, mythic, more spirit than body);Yitzchok: (Asher’s uncle and a successful businessman; happy and round). Age: 40-50.

Rivkeh Lev / Anna Schaeffer / Rachel:

Woman. Should be physically fit with some dance/movement training. Role might call for partial nudity. Familiarity with Jewish culture, traditions, Hebrew, and Yiddish a plus. Plays the following three roles: Rivkeh Lev: (Asher’s mother, an ultra Orthodox Hasidic Jew; fragile look that belies her strength and tenacity); Anna Schaeffer: (An elite gallery owner, art dealer and collector; regal, exuding class, confidence, and luxurious living); Rachel: (An artist model for figure drawing, beautiful in a dark and somber way). Age: mid 30s.
