Equity Principal Auditions:

Thursday, January 6, 2011 at the Actors' Equity Audition Center

9:30 AM — 5:30 PM 165 West 46th Street, 2nd Floor

Lunch from 1 - 2. New York, NY. Studio B

Prepare a brief song traditional musical theatre song (32 bars). Bring sheet music; accompanist provided.

Bring picture and resume, stapled together.

Rehearsal and Run dates notes: Each production rehearses for two weeks prior to the opening (usually at Ripley Grier Studios or ART/NY) in the evenings during the weekday and days on weekends. Shows run for 2 weeks (16 performance) at The McGinn/Cazale Theatre (2162 Broadway, 3rd floor between 76th and 77th Streets). Not every cast member is called to every rehearsal. There is no single day off for the entire company BUT everyone gets several complete days off during the rehearsal period.

I’D RATHER BE RIGHT

Book: George S. Kaufman, Moss Hart. Music: Richard Rodgers. Lyrics: Lorenz Hart.

A musical comedy from 1937. Peggy Jones and Phil Barker would like to marry but cannot until Phil receives a raise in pay contingent on President Roosevelt's balancing the budget. Falling asleep in Central Park, Phil dreams that he and Peggy meet Roosevelt, who summons his cabinet and even goes to battle with the Supreme Court to help the youngsters. Seemingly stymied, Roosevelt suggests the couple marry anyway, and when Phil awakes from his dream that is precisely what he and Peggy decide to do. Notable songs: Have You Met Miss Jones?; Off the Record; I'd Rather Be Right.

Seeking:

Peggy Jones:

(20s) ingénue/girl friend a soprano (legit) but not a high one, just a typical old time medium legit voice.

Phil Barker:

(20s) ingénue/boy friend (to an F - can be either tenor or high baritone - depending upon who we like as a character).

FDR:

(he was 55 in 1937 – played by George M Cohan) character baritone (Cohan spoke a lot of his songs, but we'll probably sing more)

Cabinet:

There are ten (10) listed and most have speaking parts, but this may be paired down to 6 or 7 as follows: James A Farley; Frances Perkins: (the only woman) mezzo/belt; Henry Morgenthau: baritone but it might be interesting if he can do a “period crooner” style in the 2nd act; Cordell Hull; Homer Cummings; Henry Wallace

Ensemble:

5-6 men and 3-4 women. 20 – 40. Regular voices (women who can “belt” a little and legit a little; men are all medium range and more character). Vocal arrangements may be changed to fit the vocal types of performers cast.

THEODORE & CO.

Runs: 3/15 – 3/27/11

Musical Director: Paul Johnson

Music: Ivor Novello, Jerome Kern

English musical comedy. This show established Ivor Novello as a theatrical composer and was Kern's first show in London. Lord Theodore Wragge is a “poor little rich boy” trying to make ends meet by offering questionable personal services to peers. He has been asked by his Uncle to provide additional guests to an elegant reception and Theo sells tickets. The resulting mélange includes a gigolo intend on blackmailing Lady Pansy. To throw the villain off the track, Theo disguises her as an actress and finds that her own father is smitten by her…..

sets her sights on George Wye (40s) CHARACTER SOPRANO

Cosmo Legallos:

gigolo; blackmailer if necessary – hiss-able (30-40s) LEGIT BARITONE

Lord Theodore Wragge:

“poor little rich boy”; trying to make ends meet by providing personal services to peers of questionable morals – cynical; harbors real affection for Pansy (20-30s) LEGIT BARITONE

Lady Pansy:

the ingénue of the piece who is tricked by Cosmo and whose reputation is saved by Theo when he transforms he into actress “Baby Grand” (20-30s) LEGIT SOPRANO

Pony Twitchen:

2nd in command of Theo & Co; in love with Fudge Robinson; Baby Grand’s butler (30-40s) CHARACTER VOICE

Fudge Robinson:

the dimmest bulb in Theo’s operation but with a heart of – you guessed it! (flirts w/Duke – is Guinevere – Baby Grand’s sister) (20-30s) CHARACTER SOPRANO W/BELT

Crump:

Theo & Co’s Jack-of-all-Trades (butler; Uncle Septimus; Malpas) (any age) CHARACTER VOICE

Alma:

a Theo & Co helper; a featured performer at the New Casino; and romantically interested in Cosmo (20-30s) CHARACTER SOPRANO W/BELT

Cleo:

a Theo & Co helper and a featured performer at the New Casino; transforms Pansy into Baby Grand; and is also interested in Cosmo (20-30s) CHARACTER SOPRANO W/BELT

Mr. Satterthwaite:

country bumpkin (any age) CHARACTER VOICE

Lady Diana Camden:

Pansy’s “friend” and all-round gossip (20-30s) CHARACTER VOICE

UP IN CENTRAL PARK

A musical play. Rosie Moore, the daughter of a Tweed Ring politician, loves the muckraking reporter, John Matthews, but after he writes an article exposing Mr. Moore and his cronies, Rosie breaks off their romance and marries another man. Luckily, when she comes to her senses, she learns her new spouse is a bigamist, so she can still marry John. Notable songs: April Snow; The Big Back Yard; Close as Pages in a Book; When You Walk in the Room; Carousel in the Park.
