MILK AND HONEY Score: Jerry Herman. Book: Don Appell. Mus Dir: Jim Stenborg. 1st reh: 9/26/11. Runs 10/11-10/23.

Note: Overall vocal style: Very legit; widows are legit-mix rather than full belt.

Phil Arkin:

40-50, American. Visiting recently married daughter in Israel. Accommodating himself to a long and loveless marriage. Originally played by Robert Weede. Baritone (with low A and high Gb); mature, legit sound.

Ruth Stein:

40-50. Handsome woman. Touring Israel with a group of American Jewish widows. Originally played by Mimi Benzell. Soprano (low Bb to high Ab); mature, legit sound.

David:

20s-30, Israeli. Committed to the hard life of the kibbutz, and to his American bride and their child-to-be. Originally played by Tommy Rall. Tenor (to Bb); full, legit sound, no pop, but also to low A.

Mrs. Weiss:

50s+. Almost a caricature of the Jewish widow of the 1960s – any man will do, and an Israeli would be perfect. Originally played by Molly Picon. Low F (Eb) to C.

Barbara Stein:

20s-30, American. Phil’s daughter. “Heavy with child.” Trying to make the best of her new Israeli life. No solos.

Adi:

Arab man, 20s-30s. Pops up to add color/a little conscience/a little “local” music. Character baritone to E.

Other American Widows:

Medium low voices as above (low F (Eb) to C).

Cantor, Shepherd Boy, Policeman, Wedding Couples, Cafe Arab, Man of the Moshav, Mr. Horowitz.

Chorus:

Either 3-part women and 3-4 part men, or unison (could be broken into solos in some cases).

ALL AMERICAN Music: Charles Strouse. Lyrics: Lee Adams. Book: Mel Brooks. Mus Dir: David Bishop. 1st reh: 10/11/11. Runs 10/25-11/6.

Professor Fodorski:

Man, 40-50. Eastern European immigrant and intellectual who comes to a rural, football-oriented “Baptist” college to teach Physics. Awkward duck-out-of-water who, by becoming a celebrity, is transformed, temporarily, into the selfish celebrity stereotype. Originally played by Ray Bolger (not necessarily the perfect casting). Character baritone to F.

Elizabeth Hawkes-Bullock:

30-40. Dean of the school founded by her great-great-grandfather. While focused on the welfare of the students and the school, she cannot escape the football “reality”. Admires/loves Fodorski’s dedication and ingenuousness, and works to reclaim those traits when celebrity rears its ugly head. Attractive. Though somewhat repressed, she can and does let her hair down. Low Bb to F. Think Barbara Cook, Audra McDonald, etc.

Edwin Bricker:

20s. Bookworm who morphs into a football hero, because he applies the science of physics to the art of kicking. Skinny. Romantic. Succumbs easily to adulation. Baritone.

Susan Piedmont:

20s. Soubrette – capable of being both the “sweet young thing” and a “hot number”. Will ultimately succeed in saving Edwin from himself. Belt and upper legit notes, Bb to Eb.

President Piedmont:

50s. Pompous head of the school. Character baritone.

Hulk Stockworth:

40-50. Blustery head football coach. Character baritone.

H. H. “Hilly” Henderson:

40-50. “Mad Men”-type – a business executive constantly seeking an edge. Character baritone.

Football Players:

20s. Big and dumb. Range of vocal types.

Co-eds:

20s. Small and cute. Range of vocal types

Immigrants, Professors, School Staff:

20s-40s. Range of vocal types.
