Rene Gallimard
Male, 30-50, a French diplomat stationed in Beijing in the mid-1960's, who carries on a love affair over many years with a Chinese opera actress, who he later discovers to be a spy as well as a man. Initially insecure about his masculinity, this romance with his own Madame Butterfly empowers and elevates Gallimard, until the truth comes out, forcing him to face his own self-delusion, and the tragedy of his love.
Song Liling
Asian, 20-40, a Chinese opera singer who carries on a love affair with a French diplomat over many years, but turns out to be a spy and a cross-dressing male. Movement and singing skills necessary. Ability to sing counter-tenor a plus. Nudity required.
Marc - Man #2 - Agent #2 - Consul Sharpness
White male, 20-40. Marc is Gallimard's popular friend from childhood, a traditional, confident, heterosexual male. Charming, but tends towards vulgarity and boys will be boys misogyny.
Helga - Woman at Party
White female, 30-40, Gallimard's wife. The daughter of an Ambassador, she is a pleasant and charming diplomatic wife, who values order, socializing and keeping up appearances.
M. Toulon - Man #1 - Agent #1 - Judge
Male, 40-60. Gallimard's boss, Toulon is the French Ambassador to China, mid-1960's. Likes gossip, alcohol, and his diplomatic status, but ultimately proves cowardly.
Comrade Chin - Suzuki
Asian female, 20-40. A Chinese Communist functionary from a peasant family, she serves as Song Liling's handler from the Party. A true zealot and believer, she finds her assignment and Song himself distasteful, until the Cultural Revolution gives her some real power.
Renee - Pinup Girl
Female, 20's. Renee is a Swedish student studying Chinese in Beijing in the mid-1960's, a free spirit and proto-hippie exploring cultural exchange and sexual liberation. Nudity required.
