KATHA:
Late 30s -- an urban professional who has just suffered a miscarriage. While she is beaten down by her current situation and life-style, she is desperate to make a change. Hard-edged but relatable. Depressed but funny. In the 21st century, she is vulnerable and reliant on her husband for emotional support; in the 1950s, she has a very strong and charismatic core that was waiting to come out.
ELLEN:
Late 30s-early 40s. Attractive in a brittle way. A fierce keeper of protocol. The strong mask she’s created for the community conceals a very vulnerable and insecure interior. Her love for Dean, in particular, is her Achilles heel. Ellen is very dangerous when she’s hurt, like a wounded animal. The head of the local Authenticity Committee, and mentors Katha. We are drawn to her precisely because of her extreme commitment to the 50s culture. Also plays JENNA, early to mid 30s. A very contemporary, snarky office worker who loves secrets.
RYU:
Late 30s, Katha's husband -- a Japanese-American plastic surgeon who is caring and generous, witty and urbane. He loves his wife deeply but is growing weary of her inability to bounce back from the miscarriage. He's a wise skeptic whose love for his wife forces him to take a leap that throws him off-kilter. He is a handsome, strong, capable man.
DEAN:
Late 30s-early 40s Leader in 1950s community -- an incredibly charismatic and handsome man. He is disarming and warm and earnest, and has an ease about him. People immediately want to invest in him. He is not unlike a great spiritual leader, on the surface. But there is considerable darkness and guilt underneath. Dean harbors secrets that color his warmth, bringing an edge to his interactions from time to time. He feels he's doing the right thing, and is hard-pressed to really take in how that may negatively affect others.
ROGER:
Late 30s Dean's lover -- a very likeable, masculine, blue-collar type guy. He's got a sexual charisma to him that makes him a little dangerous. He's willful and passionate and pushes pretty hard to get what he wants - but manages to do so without saying things outright. Seemingly simple but actually quite dark and complex. Also plays OMAR, a very urbane, gay co-worker of Katha's in 21st century. He's power-hungry and a bit bitchy without being over the top. Even though he's ambitious, his own petty fascinations will get in his way of truly succeeding.
