Actors should bring an instrument if they have one.

It is ok to sing music from the show. If not, traditional musical theatre

(a brief up-tempo and a ballad) will suffice.

Thrown into prison on trumped-up charges, Miguel Cervantes and his manservant find themselves among a throng of debtors, thieves and worse. Together, the unlikely ensemble creates the legendary and magical tale of the knight errant, Don Quixote.

Seeking the following only (read notice carefully; submit only if you are right for one or more these roles and you are free to work throughout the contract dates):

Notes from casting personnel: “Everyone … must sing and dance and be physically fit. It is a physically rigorous show. The nature of the show being a play within a play means that actors play multiple roles. We are seeking an ethnically diverse cast. Seeking actors who play trumpet, piccolo, guitar, clarinet and/or oboe, drums and all kinds of percussion (not all parts, but interested in all actors’ musical ability).”

Manservant / Sancho:

Male, 40s. Ideally, track will be cast as Hispanic. Earthy, lovable, charming, strong. A bit portly. Deeply loyal. He worries, frets and protects in both roles. Tries to be reasonable, but his heart leads him into misadventures with his master, Don Quixote. Doesn’t need to be a great dancer, but needs to be light on his feet and physically agile. No instrument is necessary for this role. $600/week.

The Governor / Innkeeper / As Cast:

Male, 30s-50s. Ideally, track will be cast as African American. Governor: Commanding presence. Runs the inside of the prison. Born leader. Not of the upper classes, he gets his authority through his charisma, intelligence and brute force, all of which he uses to manage the prisoners. Innkeeper: Gruff, with no couth, but not evil. Has a good heart underneath, and willingly goes along with the delusions of Don Quixote until chaos ensues. Commanding, with a soft heart. Bass baritone or baritone. $600/week.

Duke / Doctor Carrasco / As Cast:

Male, 40s-60s. Remnants of a gentleman. Even in prison, he appreciates his class. He doesn’t believe in justice because, underneath his corrupt soul, he is an aristocrat who would destroy anything that doesn’t fit into his world view. Poets and dreamers have no place in his finite universe. No matter a prisoner or a lord, he would abuse power. Baritone. $600/week.

Aldonza / Dulcinea:

Female, 20s-30s. Ideally, track will be cast as African American, Hispanic or Middle Eastern (but all ethnicities are welcome to submit). Beautiful, sexy, and lean. Charismatic, commanding presence. Attractive and not afraid of her body. Aldonza is a veteran prostitute, who is seen by Don Q as the ideal woman and the object of romantic courtly love. Aldonza is earthy; tough. She can put up a fight and has a mind of her own. But she also knows the score and has given in a thousand times. As “Dulcinea,” she must exude beauty, goodness and generosity of spirit. The part calls for an actress who can sing in a gutsy and angelic way and act as gruff as she is gentle and kind. Must be able to move well, physically agile. Must be a great singer. Soprano - legit and belt. Should prepare a legit musical theatre ballad and a song that shows off her belt. In the area of $600/week.

Housekeeper / As Cast:

Female, 40s-60s. Has a very elevated opinion of herself, and imagines that, in his madness, DQ might fancy her. This is her delusion. Stern. Pious. Mezzo. Prepare a musical theatre ballad. Has to play the flute. $600/week.

Anselmo:

Male, 20s. Handsome. Seeking a physically strong dancer/singer. Physically fit. Tenor. $566/week.

The roles of Don Quixote and the Padre are cast.
