Battle-of-the-sexes comedy written in 1903. Pokes fun of Britain's various social classes, and casts a satirical gaze at romantic relationships and the institution of marriage. This production will include the DON JUAN IN HELL scene, usually cut. The play begins in London, where Jack Tanner discovers that his ward, Ann, wishes to marry him. He races across the Channel to Spain to escape her and even imagines, in a dream, that he has journeyed to hell and back, all to no avail. In Shaw’s plays, women always have the upper hand.

Seeking (all roles are available):

John “Jack” Tanner:

Late 20s. Intensely bright and determinately single. Completely sublimates his emotional life in his cerebral examinations of the world. He finds great joy and power in the expression of his thoughts. His bombast masks a tremendously honorable and sensitive young man. Also plays Don Juan in the “Don Juan in Hell” scene. Upper-class British accent.

Ann Whitefield:

20s. Uncompromising when it comes to getting what she wants, and tremendously talented at manipulating everyone she meets without ever showing her hand. Charming, attractive, funny. She is determined to marry John Tanner. Also plays Dona Ana in the “Don Juan in Hell” scene. Upper-class British accent.

Roebuck Ramsden:

50s-60s. The picture of respectability, he considers himself an advanced thinker and a fearless, outspoken reformer. In reality, he is bound by convention and dated ideas. Also plays The Statue in the “Don Juan in Hell” scene. Upper-class British accent.

Octavius Robinson:

20s. Attractive young man with the soul of a poet. He is determined to be in love with Miss Ann Whitefield. Fully idealizes women and the world they live in. Upper-class British accent.

Violet Robinson:

20s. Sister of Octavius. Self-possessed young lady who is able to face the sharpest criticism with complete composure. Pragmatic, determined. Everything is a simple negotiation to her. She is secretly wedded. Upper-class British accent.

Henry (’Enry) Straker:

30s. John Tanner’s chauffeur. Takes pride in belonging to the labor class. He is insightful, bright, easily amused, and has a quick temper. Cockney accent.

Mrs. Whitefield:

50. Ann’s mother. Smart, knowing, facing life as recently widowed. She knows her daughter’s faults well, and yet is pulled along by her daughter’s strong will. Still, nobody’s fool. Upper-class British accent.

Hector Malone:

20s. Wealthy young American. He is, secretly, Violet Robinson’s husband. He conceals his identity because his father will disinherit him for marrying Violet. He is terrified of his father. American accent.

Mendoza:

40s. President of a well-organized group of marauding brigands. He is philosophical and polite, even when kidnapping and robbing. He is also an extremely articulate poet. Also plays The Devil in the “Don Juan in Hell” scene. Slight Spanish accent.

Mr. Malone:

50s. Hector’s father. Wealthy snob who is maniacally determined that his son should marry a titled young woman. In the end, he is won over by Violet’s shrewd manipulations and by his own pride. Irish accent.
