MACK & MABEL
MACK - (45-60) CAST. Gruff real life silent film director. Cantankerous, great sense of humor. Madly in love with Mabel Normand. Baritone to F#.
MABEL - (22-32) CAST. Charismatic, beautiful and funny real life silent film star. A range equal to Broad physical comedy and devastating tragedy. Belt/mix to E flat.
LOTTIE (40-60) CAST. Expert comedienne, brilliant Tap Dancer, with a motherly sympathetic side. Huge Broadway Belt to C.
FRANK WYMAN: (24-34) Ambitious young screenwriter. Starts off as a bit of a puppy dog but gains maturity and confidence over the almost 20-year span of the play. Madly in love with Mabel. Historically, he becomes legendary film director/writer, Frank Capra. High energy. (Bari-tenor - sings to a G)
WILLIAM DESMOND TAYLOR: (35-50) Extremely handsome, movie star and director of the silent era. Oily and calculating, but not a cliché. His murder remains one of Hollywood’s most famous unsolved crimes. Moves very well. NOTE: Singing a plus but not necessary.
KLEIMAN: (40-65) Tough but comedic Studio Executive. Strong Character Man. Razor Sharp Comedy Timing and Invention. (Baritone - sings to an F sharp)
FOX: (40-65) High-strung, comically nervous Studio Executive. Highly comedic - a genius physical comic. (Baritone - Sings to an F sharp)
ROSCOE “FATTY” ARBUCKLE:(30-45) Hilarious, brilliant, plus-sized. A rubber faced, adept physical comedian, pratfalls and a certain comic fearlessness. (Tenor - sings to A)
WATCHMAN: (45-65) Longtime night watchman for the Keystone Studios. Gentle and kind, beloved by all. Keeps a special watchful eye on Mabel Normand. (Bari-tenor - sings to a G)
ELLA: (24-34) Cantankerous, tough lady, whose piano-playing sets the mood on the set of Mack Sennett’s silent pictures. Eventually graduates to head the Music Department of a major Hollywood studio. Piano skills optional. (Alto- belts to B flat)
PHYLLIS FOSTER: (20-30) Hollywood starlet, sometimes-girlfriend of William Desmond Taylor. Dances and moves very well. NOTE: Will potentially understudy the role of Mabel.
ENSEMBLE: VARIOUS ASSISTANT DIRECTORS, GRIPS, WARDROBE WOMEN, SCRIPTS GIRLS, WAITERS, PARTY GUESTS, KEYSTONE COPS and BATHING BEAUTIES who fill out the SINGING AND DANCING ENSEMBLE.
